Rating: Summary: The picture quality not really likes DVD Review: I've got this DVD yesterday, I just can say:"not bad". of course not good. the cover picture quality really let me down, and then I did put the DVD-rom. the picture quality let me down again. Rating: Summary: This is unbelievable...3 guitar heros on one stage Review: I had always admired the skills of these 3 guitarists. It's almost like a dream to see three of them playing on the same stage. This DVD is a must have for all the guitar shredders out there. VAI...SATRIANI...YNGWIE...see these guitar gods in action.
Rating: Summary: THE Concert......nothing more to say Review: I saw the G3'03 in pensacola in Nov 1 2003 (First row center) and I have to say it was the best of the best, back then I only could say "I hope they make a DVD" and FINALLY it's here, Vai's Triple Jem, Satch's New Candy Red and the classics Chrome Boy and Flames, and Yngwie with his Strats and his skills... WOW... Of course I would have loved FULL SETS on the DVD (the total show time was less than 3 hours, but you only get about 2 on the DVD), but the cool thing is that you can almost complete the sets of songs with the G3'03 Rokin' in the Free World CD... Cool CAMERA (cooler FRET-CAM), Excellent SOUND and OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES...guys:it doesn't get much better than that. Remember that this is not a guitar lesson, it's a concert...THE CONCERT...I highly suggest to get both DVD and CD and get ready to enjoy the way electric guitar is really played... JonK
Rating: Summary: I think it was great Review: In my opinion the dvd was great, I'm only giving it 4 stars because I thought that the appropiate song selection was not chosen. Don't mistake me, the songs on the dvd are awesome, but there could be some better ones. "Always with me Always with you" is on the cd, why couldn't they put it on the dvd? same thing with Malmsteen's "Blitzkrieg". As far as the performances go, Yngwie absolutely rocks on this dvd, there's no doubt about that. Satriani's Midnight will leave you with your mouth open, and Vai, well, it can't get any better for this man. You still should definetly own a copy of this as well as one of the '96 G3.
Rating: Summary: "This is Spinal Tap" Stuck in Fast Forward Review: Yngwie Malmsteen's band looked like they were beamed onstage straight from 1984. I felt like I was watching footage from "This is Spinal Tap" stuck in fast-forward. Malmsteen is the fastest guitar player I've ever seen, but his set left me asking "What's the point?" Every song, bar after bar, consists of nothing more than triplet runs at breakneck speeds. Save you self from watching his entire set--you'll see it all in the first two minutes. (Well, the acoustic guitar solo deserves a look too.)All 4 of my stars are for Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. They are great live performers, and this DVD offers entertaining footage of both of them. Much of Satriani's set has been seen before on his "Live in San Francisco" DVD, but his material still sounds fresh here. His playing is amazing, but tempered by good taste. Steve Vai's set is my favorite I've seen from him--his songs are surprisingly mainstream (after his opening stint on a triple-neck guitar) and he showcases his band well. I highly recommend one of Satriani or Vai's solo DVDs where you can see a more complete performance.
Rating: Summary: The best Review: This is a major improvement over the other DVD.I went to one of these concerts at the Warner Theatre in DC,and it was an amazing show. Now I can relive the show whenever I want to.Here is my review of each song here: Joe: Satch Boogie-One of my favorite Satch songs played in fine form.Nothing else I can really say. The Extremist-Great song.Lots of fast licks and a cool harmonica solo. Starry Night-A new one off the Strange Beautiful Music album. When I went to this show, this was the first time I heard this song. It's a cool ballad, nothing else I can really say. Midnight-Cool song.It is really just a minute of three finger tapping licks.I was REALLY surprised to hear this one when I saw them live. The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing-Great closer featuring some RIPPIN' guitar solos. Steve: I know You're Here-Cool song written exclusively for the tour.He plays this one on a triple-neck guitar Juice-Cool song.Very similar to Joe's "Satch Boogie",but not as good. I'm The Hell Out Of Here-AWESOME song that features a part where Steve,Tony,Billy, and Dave fret each others instruments. This was my favorite Vai song when I saw them live. Yngwie: Evil Eye-GREAT song to open a show.Features a really cool duel with keyboardist Joakim Svalberg. Baroque and Roll-A new one of the Attack album.Cool song, nothing else I can say. Acoustic Guitar Solo-A REALLY good solo played on an acoustic guitar.Nothing else I can say. Adagio-An intro to "Far Beyond The Sun".Nothing that special. Far Beyond The Sun-The BEST song on the DVD.I like it better here than when I saw them.At the end,he rips the strings off the guitar. He then smashes it and then throws it into the audience.
Rating: Summary: Maybe my hopes were too high Review: When I heard G3 would feature the top 3 guitar legends of the 80s I was excited. Maybe my hopes were too high but this DVD left me feeling a bit bland. G3 may be Satriani and Vai's creation, but in this presentation Malmsteen stole the show. He played with more energy and excitement than the others. The song selection for Satriani and Vai did not seem good. With the exception of Satch Boogie and Juice, this DVD did not show these fine players at their best. Vai's opening piece was irritating to listen to and sounded like somebody experimenting with new ideas and sound effects live on stage. The sound of Satriani's guitar was buzzy and not like his usual cool sound. At the end of the DVD all 3 guitarists played together which should have been a historic event. It was great to see but only Little Wing worked out well. Rocking in the Free World demonstrated the mismatch between the different playing styles and Voodoo Child seemed disjointed. I did not get the CD but a friend tells me the song selection and performances on the CD are actually better than the DVD. Maybe after several G3 DVD and CD products the best Satriani and Vai songs have already been released several times and that is why on this DVD the song selections for these 2 seem weaker. It is still worth seeing and worth owning as it is the best guitar performance you will see these days but it is not quite what you may have expected with these 3 guitar legends side by side. To see these guys at their best you would need to buy their respective solo concert DVDs.
Rating: Summary: Whoever came up with G3 is a genius!!!!!! Review: I don't know where to start. This DVD is awesome!!!!!! I bought the old G3 concert on DVD and that was awesome, but it was nothing compared to this masterpiece. It's a very well made DVD. The sounds are all well mixed and the camera angles are good. I'll review each song. That way those that don't know the setlist can see it. Joe: Satch Boogie - great version of it, a little slower than the live in S.F. version, but it sounds great. The Extremist - awesome version, harmonica solo sounds good as does the solo Starry Night - glad he played this, it's from his latest album, nice slow song with some great guitar playing in it Midnight - very cool to hear it, even cooler to see it played The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing - this song is always awesome live, sounds very good. Steve: I Know You're Here - Wow, awesome intro with a very cool guitar, you'll see what i mean, then it goes into a song with some vocals and then solos, great Juice - awesome solos, awesome riff, awesome song I'm the Hell Outta Here - WOW! the whole band gets into this one, I love this song and am really sad that it's not on the CD version, just watch it the whole way through and I promise afterwards you'll be screaming, "WHOA, THAT WAS AWESOME!!!" Yngwie, definitely a great addition this time, and i don't care what anyone else says, Yngwie f***in' rules!!!: Evil Eye - fast flying fingers and cool solos between guitar and keyboard Baroque and Roll - very cool sounding intro and great fast solos Acoustic Guitar Solo - fast and intense on acoustic, it's, for lack of better words, awesome Adagio - good sound to it Far Beyond the Sun - this song has always been awesome, great intro riff and some fierce solos, and then he finishes up the song very brutally (you'll see what i mean) While these performances are already amazing, now they all come out together!!!!!! G3: Rockin' in the Free World - SWEET!!! I've been waiting to see someone besides Pearl Jam to cover this. starts off with some cool feedback, then the powerful, driving drums come in as Steve and Yngwie play some harmony, then the song starts, Joe sings lead vocals, awesome solo session between them all, Yngwie gets a little greedy on one part (just watch Steve) it's funny, then there's a great harmony spot with all of them, then it's excellent from there out Little Wing - starts off slow and soft with Steve singing, then they do the solo thing and all play together and it sounds GLORIOUS!!! Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Oh Hell yeah!!!! Yngwie starts it off and sings! i didn't know he could sing, well actually, it's a good thing there aren't tons of lyrics, hehe, the solos are great and that's all there is to say That's that. This DVD is so awesome. Seriously this is so much better than the old DVD. I love it so much. If you like any of these guys, this DVD is totally worth buying. It's one of the best concerts ever!!! Buy it now, or i promise you'll be sorry. G3 RULZ!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Guitarists will buy this anyway Review: Bottom line: If you are a guitarist, you will probably add this DVD to your collection anyway. Overall, the performances will leave you a bit disappointed. As a guitarist, I expected these 3 excellent musicians to showcase their talent with a diverse selection of instrumentals. This was not the case. Satriani could have phoned in his performance. If you have never seen Joe play live before, then enjoy. If you have, fast forward through Joe's parts -- there's nothing new here. Satriani is almost flawless in his ability to duplicate his own previously recorded compositions. Vai starts things out with a great instrumental on a 3 neck guitar. Unfortunately, that's where his performance seems to fizzle out. He (like Satriani) can't seem to play a song without using a wah wah pedal, or tap picking. The constant tap picking and wah effects by Satriani and Vai were so boring, that I almost stopped watching entirely. Yngwie looked ridiculous. I kept telling myself that this is a live performance, and that he was trying to "put on a show". Theatrics aside, Yngwie was the most entertaining of the bunch. His acoustic guitar solo was a real treat. However, he was as monotonous as Satriani and Vai. I guess each of them had their moment. Satriani with a two handed tapping instrumental, Vai with his 3 necked guitar, and Yngwie with his acoustic solo. The jam session with all three guitarists at the end of the DVD was nothing to write home about. I would have liked to have seen each of the guitarists play more instrumentals that showcased their range. 2 stars because it features three great guitarists. The "Friday Night in S.F." recording (Demeola, John, and Paco) makes this DVD performance almost amateurish IMO.
