Rating: Summary: How can it get any better? Review: Okay, I may not be a big fan of Roy Orbison, but you don't just have to be a fan to enjoy seeing him in concert. And if you own this on dvd, you will get the full concert plus Claduette and Blue Bayou for some reason, is not on the video tape. Yet, this is a rare concert to see in black and white. Roy Orbison and severla perfromers at the Conut Grove, pefroming this concert. But sadly since this concert, Conut Grove, was demolished. And Roy Orbison had died of a heart attack a year after doing this concert. Roy Orbison sings sings song like Only The Lonely, Candy Man, Sweet Dreams Baby (How Long Must I dream), Claudette, and Oh, Pretty Woman. If you want to see Roy Orbison, peforming in concert, in your home, this will be it, because there no other live recordings of Roy Orbison. Yet, he played a lot of concerts. If you have seen the concert, and wonder why he is wearing sunglasses, the people at WTTW said, that Roy Orbison had bad eye sight, and he couldn't see without glasses, and he has even tried, they also said, one day before playing a concert in England, Roy Orbison discovered that he had left his regular glasses at home, but it just so happened that he had sunglass on him, and that became his trade mark. Just recently WTTW, aired this concert twice in one week, first on a Sunday Night, then a Saturday night. If you enjoy a concert with very little talk, in it, this is the concert for you, Roy Orbison onlyed talked twice and both was to say "Thank You" and some body else is heard (not very well) saying 1, 2, 3, 4, before a song. And I have to admit, for being in his 50's at the time of this peformance, Roy Orbison looks very good for his age, in fact, I don't even believe he was only in his early 50's, because he looks like he was younger than he looks in his early 50's.
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC! Review: Over the years I have always enjoyed listening to Roy Orbison. He is truly in a class all his own. However, in my search for listening to my new 5.1 system I came across this DVD. It has been a listening experience that practically overwelmed me, my brothers and sisters. It is truly awesome. The sound is one of the best I have ever experienced and I promise the DTS experience DELIVERS! Few times have I had a group of people over and have them ask me to turn up the volume--its magic. This is a "must absolutely have" DVD if you are the slightest Orbison fan---you will not be disappointed. The boss, Springsteen's guitar and background vocals along with three other guitars will mesmerize you. The video is sharp, the sound is awesome, but the performance is simply wonderful. Listening to this and watching with the volume up is as close as you can get to actually being there. After the grande finale of Pretty Woman, everyone in the room was AMAZED...buy it now!!!
Rating: Summary: Stunning! Not just for "fans"... Review: Last year, an electronics store here in Tokyo wisely chose this DVD to try to sell more 'home theater' systems. I was in a huge rush, but was instantly captivated by the phenomenal guitar sounds I was hearing. Milliseconds later, I recognized the song, the major artist and the fact that there was probably a whole, live concert of Roy Orbison being played. I stopped my mad rush to an appointment to listen to "Pretty Woman" in its entirety. [This is the finale...] Then, as the crowd in front of me dissipated, I caught sight of some of the performers on a gigantic, but low, plasma display and was a little surprised to see that the whole concert had obviously been recorded in monochrome. I have to admit that I've never been a huge Roy Orbison fan--I didn't buy his albums when I was young, but no-one could really DISlike his voice or his compositions. I probably knew every one of his numbers that was regularly played on the radio and I consider myself to have "grown up" singing along to Roy Orbison's mellow sounds. So, although my tastes run the gamut from world and ethnic music, thru blues, jazz and 'fusion' all the way to classics and a (very) little opera, I don't classify myself as a great 'rock-a-billy' fan, or even as an expert on music. That day, however, I became obsessed with getting hold of this particular concert for enjoyment at home. I got hold of it easily enough from Amazon and have to say that it knocked my socks off. For me, the real highlights are the guitarwork of James Burton and Bruce Springsteen, but the whole 'feel' of this concert is one of a tribute to that inimitable, great voice. Many of the supporting artists are legends in their own neck of the woods, but there are no 'show-ponies' here--it's all just a well-rehearsed, supportive, even modest performance--yet there are many moments when one gets a feeling of watching and hearing musical genius in action. Younger friends and relatives who had only a passing knowledge of Roy Orbison were stunned by the brilliance of the performances on this DVD. I've bought several copies as gifts, which were very highly appreciated. I think the playing of those at Christmas and New Year gatherings may have stimulated a buying spree anong the many other people who were captivated, as I was, by the whole sound and feel of this delectable DVD. I don't avidly collect music videos, yet I've seen many from all of the 'greats'. However, I've never seen a better concert on video. I don't think anyone who really loved music could watch this and be unaffected. I've read all of the reviews, so far, and I agree with almost every single one...I have one or two very minor gripes, but it's probably not worth your time to read those. If you love great music, just shell out the money and buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Rating: Summary: I didn't realize how great Roy was... Review: I didn't realize exactly how great Roy Orbison was until I saw his "Black & White Night" on PBS several months ago. That session brought all of my memories together into one massive event. I contributed to the PBS station just to get the VHS and CD versions of that concert, recognizing just how special it was. I just now spent nearly five hours listening to that CD while I read most of the 115 reviews on Amazon (avg = 5 stars out of 5) of the DVD, and the advantages (editing, video enhancements, extra tracts) of the DVD over the VHS and CD version I have. I just ordered two copies of the DVD (one to watch/listen to, and one for backup). If you have read this far, you realize the contribution of Roy, his talent, and the incredible array of stars that attended him at the "Black & White Night" event. For no other reason than your personal satisfaction, buy this DVD!
Rating: Summary: A Magical Surprise Review: . I've always been a "passive" listener to Roy Orbison....enjoyed his stuff, but never got to the point of buying an album. I decided to take a chance on this DVD because of all the great reviews, and I'm VERY glad I did. The moment Roy opens his mouth to sing the first note of "Only the Lonely" it is impossible to do anything but smile. Yes, his voice is a legend - but watching it happen really brings home the magic that this man could create. Star studded band and celebrity audience adds another dimension of interest to the show. I didn't tell my friends what to expect and there were a lot of surprised people when they started to recognize all the talent on the stage (as well as in the audience). Extraordinary sound and great video quality round out a fabulous 5 star package. Thank you Roy.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding concert DVD for HT with great DTS audio! Review: Others have already done justice to the incredible ensemble of talented musicians who jammed with Roy for this "exclusive" (Cinemax) concert performance, before a celebrity/VIP audience in "Black & White Night" in September, 1987. So I will make my comments more technical in nature. First the video is 4:3 full-screen, even though the concert was shot on film, it was for exclusive presentation on Cinemax cable. If you have a home theater system with a comprehensive audio setup, you will be extremely pleased with the quality of this production. The B&W film transfer and DVD mastering is excellent with a perfect balance of digital detail and B&W grain. The audio mix and digital mastering is also exceptional. I tested the DS5.1 on a few tracks and it was certainly okay. But what really stands out is the DTS6.1 which is fabulous!! They did a great job. If you enjoy really good concert DVDs (there aren't that many), and have a system to do them justice, then Roy Orbison B&W Night will knock your socks off. You can watch/listen over and over and over. With the classic songs and the all-star ensemble, it's difficult to imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy this concert. (System is a Yamaha RX-V3000 with a 10 speaker configuration, an Epson EMP-7600 2200 lumens front projection setup with a 162" screen. It's a pretty amazing system ... if something isn't really good enough, it will basically be unwatchable and unlistenable. On the other hand, with the B&W Night concert DVD with its high resolution and super DTS mix, you can "fall into" this concert, just as if you were in the audience). What fun! This is a great DVD sure to be a favorite in your collection. Enjoy!! (After nearly two days of CNN etc, tonight I watched this DVD twice, with Roy and his pals having fun and making great music ... a strong and much needed dose of American inspiration, creativity and musical talent in this very somber week of September 11, 2001).

Rating: Summary: this DVD brought me the interest of collecting DTS DVD Review: I bought it three years ago. It was my first dts DVD and also my first Roy Orbison's DVD. I still remember the first time I viewed it after I received it. It was stunning. I would say if you have a really good sound and audio system in your home. This is a must have. I bought other dts DVDs later, including the Beatles, and the Eagles, they are also good. But this one has been the most frequently played.
Rating: Summary: 1st class class Review: This is the performance of a lifetime for a national treasure, along with the perfect cast of musicians and vocalists to propel him to it. I've noticed vast differences in sound among different DVD players. I guess that's not terribly surprising. Get a good one. -Paul ~
