Rating: Summary: is the best and always will be Review: If you are a person of any kind that enjoys ggood music, you must see this concert. I have never cried so much in my life over music. This is a must
Rating: Summary: Saw it in theater last night Review: I haven't seen the dvd yet obviously but I saw this in theaters last night and it was phenomenal. Very, very moving. Wonderful performances of George's best songs by his best friends. The commentary from the people involved was very touching as well. It is easy to see how much they truly loved George and what a great songwriter he was.
Rating: Summary: Just saw the theatrical release Review: Wow!!!! I don't know how anyone can sit through this with a dry eye!! Stunning, heartfelt performances by George's buddies. Jeff Lynne's sound mix was awesome!! The interviews with Eric, Tom Petty and others really shed light on the love for the man we all miss. George created the original benefit concert and it is only fitting that everyone came together on the anniversary of his death to pay tribute. Now I will wait patiently until the DVD release in November. Long live George!
Rating: Summary: Best concert film ever Review: I saw this film today ( 10\03\2003). I've seen a lot of concert films in my life and this is the best one hands down! To see McCartney and Clapton harmonizing was worth the price of admission. Usually in tribute concerts, there's one or two mediocre performances. NOT HERE. Every song is a gem. I only hope they release a CD of this. It's SOMETHING I can listen to over and over. I look forward to buying this even more than The Beatles On Ed Sullivan. George must be smiling!
Rating: Summary: Unreal Review: No question, this is the best of the best. The recording is exceptional, and just when you think it's over, Wah-Wah takes over. You will clap your hands to the beat of about 6 drummers including Ringo - a classic for you and your kids. Don't miss it.
Rating: Summary: Music isn't written like this anymore! Review: As a baby boomer who loved the Beatles and George Harrison, especially his "All Things Must Pass" album, I nearly fell off my bed while watching the "Concert for George" on PBS one Wednesday night in early March 2004. Being from Maui, Hawaii, where he was spotted every now and then at the Sir Wilfreds' Cafe at the Maui Mall, where he took part-time residence and played a very low profile in the community, I felt especially connected to the Indian spiritual sounds of the transcendental music on this performance composed by Ravi Shankar. Eric Clapton and friends organized a beautiful gift for their beloved friend. Heartfelt performances, interviews and dialogue in the extras on the DVD encapsulate what transpired that evening of November 29, 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall, London. If I had known about this concert, I would have post-poned my trip to London in the March of 2002 to attend this once in a life time Concert for George. Aloha & Mahalo George.
Rating: Summary: Wow, again, well done, Review: As I mentioned in a review for the cd release, which I also highly recommend, this is well done. If you can hold down the lump in your throat and/or hold back the tear in your eye, all the power to you. Clapton, Sir Paul, Ringo, Jeff Lynne, Petty, Harrison's son, and a bunch of other fine musicians playing for George and doing it in style. This is a must have.
Rating: Summary: George Harrisons Spirit Lives On! Review: The man of the hour is only present in spirit, but what a strong spirit it is, so strong is the feeling that comes off this DVD that it stays, lingers & invites you back for more. If future generations ask what George Harrision & the Beatles were all about this DVD says it all!
Rating: Summary: Simply one of the best concerts ever -- great tribute! Review: I am an avid Beatles fan and I was just blown away by the concert.
A. The Performances
Great musicians and friends/collaborators of George: Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, etc. do an outstanding job and everyone of them put their heart and soul into the songs of George Harrison and make them come alive. It is eerie, but when you listen to Clapton singing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," Paul McCartney singing "All Things Must Pass," or Billy Preston singing "My Sweet Lord," you could sense the presence of George as they're singing! Their renditions of Harrison's songs were just as masterful as George singing them. Those 3 songs stood out to me.
Some other musical highlights:
1) Ringo Starr's touching rendition of "Photograph" (the words take on a completely new meaning in this tribute) and "Honey Don't."
2) Anoushka Shankar's beautiful sitar playing accompanying Jeff Lynne's rendition of "The Inner Light."
3) Joe Brown's tender covers of "Here Comes the Sun" and "I'll See You in My Dreams."
4) Dhani Harrison's acknowledgement and thanks to all the musicians playing.
5) Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr playing together for the 1st time live in over 40 years!!! And they seem to be having a good time!
B. The Editing
I also liked how the DVD focussed its shots mostly on the musicians performing the songs, rather than panning to the audience and then back to the musicians. (This back and forth between the musicians and then the audience is a very annoying feature which plagues the Paul McCartney "live" DVDs).
C. The Unique Layout of the Discs
This movie is organized in an interesting fashion:
Disc 1 features the whole complete concert ( 2 hr 26 min) -- you cannot do any chapter or song selections.
Disc 2 is the theatrical version (2 hr 20 min) -- these are songs from the concert rearranged in order and backstage/ rehearsal scenes/ interviews of the musicians are interspersed within the songs. You can do scene / chapter selection for Disc 2.
D. Some Reservations
The only portion in this Concert DVD I didn't care too much about were some of the Monty Python numbers: 1) The song "Sit on My Face" -- totally out of place!! 2) Another Python number where the Python members show their bare rear-ends to the audience. I don't know about the audience felt, but I felt like I was being mooned. This totally detracted from the whole respectability and dignity of this whole performance.
Summary
That aside, I highly recommend this DVD. The performances are outstanding; the picture and sound quality are excellent.
If you're a Beatles fan and a fan of George, you'll love this DVD! A must-have!
Rating: Summary: Legendary tribute Review: Beautiful evening with George his friends(, except Bob Dylan).
After a few interesting songs from India, the show really took off.
First, some very silly and naughty humour of the Pythons (mooning at the Albert Hall!): like George his production of Pythons' "Life of Brian", some reviewers apparently do not share (t)his British sense of humour...
Next, a moving, brilliant and fluent performance; the evening's 5+ star highlights came from Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Joe Brown and Billy Preston in "Is it not a pity", "For you blue", "Something", "While my guitar gently weeps", "Wah wah" and "I'll see you in my dreams".
Amazing how beautiful a concert movie can be: highly recommended!
