Rating: Summary: Hammer Of The Gods Review: Led Zeppelin's self-titled DVD is a treasure chest for all fans of the band. Nearly four hours of never before seen concert footage is spread out over two disks that feature performances from every era of the band's career. It is a real eye opener for fans who never experienced the band live to see the sheer power and magnetism of the group at the height of their powers. The best aspect of the collection is the brilliant sound and picture clarity. Jimmy Page spearheaded this project and although surviving members Robert Plant and John Paul Jones contributed, Mr. Page is the lifeblood of the work. The remastering of the footage's sound and picture is breathtaking. One only need to view the four songs from the Madison Square Garden concert to see the first rate work. This is footage from a concert that was filmed for the band's 1976 film, The Song Remains The Same. In viewing that movie, the picture is somewhat grainy and the colors blurred, but on this disk, the picture is sharp and clear. Led Zeppelin sold tons of albums in the 70's, but it was their legendary live performances that made them rock gods and this collection brings that view into focus.
Rating: Summary: INCREDULOUS Review: If your not a studio musician and did not here BONZO live in studio, back in the early 70's do not respond negatively..
Rating: Summary: Rediscover the most innovate band ever! Review: Being a Led Zep fan of 20 years (note that I am 26 years old), I was too young to see Led Zep live. With "The Song Remains the Same" and the BBC sessions CDs as my only live examples, the DVD and 3 CD set will curb my hunger for now.PROS: Rediscover that Led Zep is rooted in old school rhythm and blues. Every rendition of each song is different. These guys weren't happy with doing anything the same twice. Realize that the band is having so much fun with each other than putting on an act or show for the fans. So many bands these days write music just to get people to buy records while Led Zep kept true to what inspires them in spite of what everyone wanted to hear. CONS: I don't know if this was done on purpose, but the video footage doesn't give John Paul Jones any justice. Many times you see the back of his head or nothing of him whatsoever. Just Bonzo, Page, and Plant. Jones kept a low key image in the band, but was the foundation of their sound...the glue that kept things together. Wished they had less popular songs such as The Lemon Song or South Bound Suarez. Want more interviews please! Ok, thanks for reading!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic!!!! Worth the Wait!!!! Review: This Zeppelin DVD set is fantastic, It looks and sounds wonderful. It is filled with one great song after another (I especially love the extra songs from The Song Remains the Same, disk 2, they rock). Is there any doubt that Led Zeppelin is the Greatest Hard rock band ever? get this DVD set, you will love it!
Rating: Summary: Great DVD - even with static on center of DD 5.1 Review: Yes, I too noticed the static in the center channel of the Dolby Digital track, but only on disc one. I re-listened to several tracks on disc two, trying to hear any static but didn't notice any. I would like to hear from more people on this subject before I return the DVD to Amazon for a replacement because, as one reviewer already noted, his replacement had the same problem. If you are listening to your copy for this problem, play the "White Summer" cut on disc one and listen to the front center speaker in some of the quieter passages - that's where I first noticed it. Also, noticed it in some of the quieter parts of "Dazed and Confused" which is just before "White Summer". BTW, I'm using a Toshiba DVD player and a McIntosh receiver. The DTS track does not have the static problem. I gave this DVD 5 stars anyway because I can still hear a static-free performance on the DTS track. For those who never had the opportunity to see and hear Zeppelin live, this double DVD will give you a pretty good idea of what you missed, depending on how well your system can reproduce the sound. Led Zeppelin has been my favorite band for over 30 years, even before I first saw them live in 1973 (11th row center). I was fortunate enough to see them two more times, in 1975 and 1977. We had tickets to see them a 2nd time in 1977 (at the Superdome in New Orleans) but that concert and the rest of the '77 tour was cancelled due to the death of Robert Plant's son. I disagree with one or two reviews that said the sound track on this DVD set sounded like it was "created" in the studio with multi-tracking tricks. Maybe the concerts they went to or the bootlegs they heard weren't some of Zep's best performances. But, from what I remember of the shows that I saw live, most of the performances were very good and comparable to what's on this DVD. ANYWAY, I'm not going to waste a lot of words trying to defend the absolute authenticity of every frame and note of this DVD. The pictures are great - the song selection is great - the sound is great - the performances are great. I have no doubt that, out of the 50 or so rock DVDs that I own, this one will be played ten times more often than any of the others. If you want to find out why a lot of us "old geezers" have been saying all these years that Led Zeppelin was the best live rock and roll band ever, buy this DVD or at least borrow it from someone who has it and have a look/listen. IMO, every member of this band is the best at what they do and, when they played together, it was magic. I can understand why they didn't just go out and find another drummer to replace John Bonham - he's irreplaceable. I've never heard a rock drummer that can play like that. When Zeppelin played live, they reminded me of a great jazz group (e.g. Brubeck), not because the music sounded like jazz but because they would improvise on stage and play off of each others' solos to create something special on stage. I think this DVD really does a great job of capturing that special quality that Zeppelin had when they played a live concert. I recommend it to anyone who likes rock music for the MUSIC and not for other reasons (elaborate stage shows, appearances in gossip magazines, political stances, etc.). I give it the highest rating available.
Rating: Summary: speechless Review: I was blown away by Bonhams solo "Moby Dick". It was nice to see him play this than just imagining it all these years. John Paul Jones was an underrated bassist, watching and hearing this DVD shall prove it. Watching the two makes this the best music DVD I own. I see this DVD as a tribute to John Bonham, there will never be another, just copiers.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely top quality Review: The best music video DVD of any kind that I have viewed thus far. The performances are a revelation; I had no idea just how versatile the band was -- John Paul Jones plays mandolin during the acoustic portion of the Earl's Court performance, and the band easily duplicates their studio recordings of "Going to California" and "Bron-yr-stomp". The audio is outstanding, easily surpassing what is currently available on CD. That this DVD of 20-30 year-old concert footage sold out in most stores the week of it's initial release demonstrates just how popular Led Zeppelin still is -- and how much more regard rock fans have for the classic era than they do for today's pablum.
