Rating: Summary: For Led Zep fan only Review: This is for Led Zep fan only. Many video were not in top quality. For general music fans, skip this. The Song Remains the Same is a much better choice.
Rating: Summary: OH MAN! Review: This is THE ultimated DVD, and here's why. Any Zep fanatic knows the sinister stories swirling around guitar mastermind Jimmy Page. No matter how much you love the man's music, one has stop to give thought about a person so openly intrigued by (and/or involved in) the occult. The man truly worked to cultivate an image like that of a wizard, only I don't think people realized it at the time. Does it surprise anyone that the band was seriously into Tolkien? To give fans a view of that perspective all these years later, and to clarify our reflections on the powerhouse band that was Led Zeppelin, Page holed up somewhere in a studio for a few years to craft this beautiful, breathtaking film. It is much more than a concert movie -- it plays like a mystical adventure, sort of like the Lord of the Rings played out to music from stages across Britain and America. Page looks like a Dark Lord when he takes the stage -- hair black and stringy, clothes hanging off his body in the semblance of a cape, wheeling his guitar around as though a wand. Robert Plant, on the other hand, comes off as the iconic hero, the Lord of the Light if you will -- his voluminous golden hair stretching forever, his innocent smiles to his worshipers, the slightly naive sound of his sexual squeals during intense jams. Jones and Bonham, meanwhile, stay on the sidelines, as though they might jump to one or the other's side in battle at a moment's notice. If you are now or ever once were into Led Zeppelin, I cannot recommend this movie enough. The picture clairty and sound quality are amazingly intense and perfectly restored. The editing is superb. The song selection is classic (especially the acoustic tracks on disc 2). And get this: each of the menu sequences has its own short film 3 to 5 minutes in length that help play the story out further. If Page had had the proper time and technology back in the day, this film is what The Song Remains the Same would have been, without the cheesy fantasy sequences. The two don't even compare. In some ways, they are different sides of the same kind. Here's a question: Did Zeppelin ever have a completely bad song, one that just plain SUCKED? I argue no, and that by that litmus test they are the greatest band of them all. Further, I love Jerry Garcia, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. But Jimmy Page might have been the greatest of them all. Maybe it was the dark magic after all...
Rating: Summary: RAW Zep with 5.1 mix center channel DEFECT Review: The center channel on Disc #1's Dolby 5.1 mix has a significant amount of static/crackling. I first thought it was my system but then i noticed that a few other audiophiles on this site complained about it too. Interestingly, I cannot find any way to contact the record company to ask about this defect. It doesn't seem to be a problem on the DTS mix, though. Perhaps many people play this so loud that they don't notice the static. Aside from this minor nit, this DVD is a CLASSIC!
Rating: Summary: speechless........ok i'll try Review: the most exciting live music i have never seen.........and i like justin timberlake too but he is just a boy in the shadow of page and plant at their peak....no wonder so many girls lost their self respect for these guys..i think i would have too.....sorry stop dreaming.. as a musician i am awe struck at how together they were ...sloppy???? and the foundation that kept the three exibitionists together was john paul jones...invisible???i can clearly watch his performance throughout this double set.......i played along and learned so much about how to keep animal drummers in line heee bass players know what i mean...(joking actually..watch how bonzo and jones stay locked in concentration with each other physically and mentally thru most of the shows) and i finally see all the tricks i can play with my les paul, wow gonna break it quickly!! ha ha which brings me to the sound quality....i dun have a dvd player right now and initially watched the dvd on my laptop eeeeek the tiny jbl speakers had so much volume, bass and seperation!! the master of the studio mr page still has that magic touch.... i mainly listen to j(apanese)-rock, j-pop now but i am taken on a magical misty mountain hop into history by these four amazing musicians...
Rating: Summary: PLEASE READ THIS Review: Holy moly crap!!! First of all, Thank you all who were involved with releasing this. My only gripe is that its 20 some odd years to long. If you are a Zeppelin fan, you already have this DVD. If you are a guitarist, drummer, singer, bassist, keyboardist, musician or semi fan of Led Zeppelin and don't have this DVD, do yourself a favor and purchase it, NOW! I can't describe how good this DVD is. The Song Remains The Same is great, however this is a dream come true. If my house were on fire, I would grab my wife and kids and this DVD. Yes, it's that good. Do yourself a favor and pick this up. I'll probably never meet my earthly idols but this is the damn next best thing. This reminds me what the meaning of great songs and rock and roll is all about.
Rating: Summary: Unearthed, unheard, unseen Review: For anyone who even considers himself to be a true Zep fan this is a MUST OWN DVD! If all you've seen are the overplayed (and let's face it) disappointing Madison Square Gardens footage from the movie "The Song Remains the Same" then get ready to see the mighty, mighty Led Zeppelin as you've never seen them before! Disc One has incredibly rare early TV European performances but the real treat for most fans are on Disc Two which charges at you with an unseen powerhouse version of 'The Immigrant Song' and gets better from there. Where else can you see live performances of 'Achilles Last Stand'(arguably one of their best songs), 'In My Time of Dying', or 'Nobody's Fault But Mine'? It's also amazing to note that even at end of their career as a band, it's always been the same four guys playing all the songs in concert. No extra musicians on stage (guitarists, keyboards, strings, percussionists, etc.) to re-create their sound as most bands would do. That is a true testament to their abilities as musicians. If you haven't already done so, buy this DVD!
Rating: Summary: Frightening. Review: If it gets any better than this, God help us all. Once again Led Zeppelin prove that they were the greatest rock and roll band of all time. There are a lot of mixed reviews floating around about this DVD. All I can say is that you either "get" it or you don't...and a lot of people just don't get it. They don't completely understand what they're seeing - four musical powerhouses who have never been and will never be equalled.
Rating: Summary: Great DVD (Could have more Earls Court footage) Review: I love the DVD set, but where's the rest of the Earls Court footage? That was such a brilliant concert, why only a segment of the concerts (5 shows in all) were played there. I have heard most of the show and I know it exsists. Appart from that its a great DVD set. Let's hope a Jimi Hendrix,Who,Allman Brothers Band etc DVD will come out the same as this
Rating: Summary: Awesome--It is everything & as good as everyone says it is! Review: These are so good, I am not even sure what to write. Led Zepplin was not my very favorite group, but they did some sterling work and put on a truly aweinspiring live show. These DVDs are sterling work and capture, in a way that I have never seen film do it as well, aweinspiring live shows. The only thing that bothers me is the content of the review that indicates that the was a lot of manipulation of the video, changing around sequences and such within songs. Knowing that makes these DVDs seem a bit slick and produced. But, otherwise, this is the best live rock film or video material I have ever seen. The two DVDs are a bargain. Even if you are not a big Led Zepplin fan, I would think there is plenty here for nearly every rock fan to to enjoy and watch repeatedly. I did see Zepplin live in the day, and these DVDs really capture what it was all about. One drummer, one guitarist, one bassist (organist/mandolin player) and a vocalist, on a simple stage, who could utterly fill a hall and capture an audience. The world's greatest live rock and roll band was surely never the Rolling Stones (although, the Stones may have been the greatest rock band). It was either Led Zepplin, The Who, or Bruce Springsteen. And there has never been video document near the equal for the latter two that these DVDs are for Zepplin. And I do not think that even Springsteen is putting out the kind of show he was in say 1980. I do not know how this kind of magic really comes about, or why it is or isn't sustained, but it is captured on these DVDs. A major plus to the DVDs is to be able to see up close just how good the musicianship is--Page and Bonham. (I agree that Jones is sort of relegated to the shadows, but I think Jones himself has said that the theatre of the show was really Plant and Page.) I think Plant is fantastic on these DVDs, too. This is not easy music to make, and he sings very true to the recorded versions with power, precision, and emotion. To me, here he is the epitome of the charismatic rock god. He is for the most part just standing on the stage, but his presence is palpable. I have lots of bootleg Zepplin audio. I liked the "How the West Was Won" CDs, but not as much as I thought I would. I thought I had had pretty close to my fill of these songs, as wonderful as they are. But I have watched or had these DVDs on in the background over and over since I bought them.
Rating: Summary: Required Led Review: If you call yourself a Zeppelin fan, you owe it to yourself to view these DVD's. The song selection is great, sampling everything from the thrashing Immigrant Song to the acoustic Going to California. The production is simply amazing, from the track selection menus (just like a CD!) to the amazing quality of the sound and video footage. The Earl's Court songs could have been filmed at an MTV Unplugged special within the last couple years. Zeppelin is a live band. I've never seen them live, being born in '76. My previous experience with Zeppelin was limited to albums and the "Song Remains The Same" video. These DVD's are like seeing Zeppelin as they were meant to be.
