Summary: It isn't THAT bad...
Review: I, like many others (too many to count), did not see this film in theaters. Instead, I rented it when it came out on video. It really isn't that bad. So, the acting is kind of wooden, but that increases its camp value. Plus, Mariah's voice is stunning in this picture! It's a shame that this movie got a critical beating, but...it's not for everybody. For one, you have to like Miss Carey to fully enjoy the film. Overall, this gets a B+. It really isn't terrible.

Review: I really really enjoyed this movie. It had a great plot and good story line from start to end. The acting was great. I wouldn't think twice to buying this movie or soundtrack, I have both.

Summary: Mariah Carey's Glittering Debut!
Review: Why everyone has been doggin' on Glitter I'll never know! I saw this movie 3 times on it's premiere day in New York City! The movie is an emotional roller coaster for a little girl named Billie Frank who grows into womanhood and stardom all at once. It's set in the 80's club scene and the music in the movie is mad tight! (GET THE SOUNDTRACK!!) The vintage wardrobe was pulled off amazingly well. Everything looked authentically 80's. (scary huh?) The DVD comes with 2 bonus videos (Loverboy and Never Too Far) and a cool director's commentary. ANyway, the ending was surprising and emotional. This film is surprising and a little bit dark. I think everyone should actually see it before they open up their mouths and start hatin.

Summary: Two wasted hours of my life
Review: An unbelievably bad, ego trip of a movie. The entire script seemed to be a thinly veiled excuse to push Mariah's already inflated ego into something approaching a god complex. Every scene screamed a dual message: that Mariah/Billie was the most talented singer in the world, and that she was the most beautiful woman in the world. I came away from the movie convinced that both were as far from the truth as possible. Nearly every action and every line of dialogue was a cliche. Even the "dramatic plot twists" that they threw at us came off as silly and annoying. We found ourselves laughing hysterically at a movie that was trying to be high drama and yet fell very short. Also, we literally lost track of the number of scenes. It was as though they wanted to put in as many very brief scenes (most of which went nowhere) as they possibly could. If we could sit through it again we'd probably count the scenes, and wouldn't be surprised if there turned out to be over a hundred scenes, many of which lasted less than a minute. However, I see no way I could ever sit through this joke of a movie again.

Summary: An Underserved Bad Rap
Review: After hearing how HORRIBLE this movie and Mariah were, I had to watch it out of curiosity. I was very pleasantly surprised by the "Purple Rain" like storyline. Mariah and her love interest had surprisingly good chemistry. The movie and Mariah were trashed underservingly by critics. She could have gotten into her character a little more, but the storyline was quite emotional. Give this movie a try.

Review: I don't understand the bad review the critics gave this movie! Marey does an excellent acting job of convincing me that she was Billie. The story line was great and the other actors were great as well. This movie and Ms. Carey deserves a second chance and this comes from someone who IS NOT a Mariah Carey fan. By the way the music in the movie was awesome. Where's the Movie Soundtrack???

Summary: Your basic rags to riches story
Review: If you like the basic storyline of a good girl who's got the raw end of the deal......and then finds fame, fortune, love, and of course heartbreak, then here's your movie, Mariah Carey aside. She's not half bad, she's just a singer, who's trying to be an actress. And sing she does wonderfully. So this story is for all those who liked Coyote Ugly, Blaze, A Thing Called Love, and of course Showgirls. Same story, just different actors. Set in the 80's, "Billy" is discovered and the rest is history. Max Beesley as her boyfriend/producer "Dice" I enjoyed most, and her friends "Roxy" and "Louise" are terrific. Though she's not my favorite, she didn't do that bad of a job for her first time out. So it's not awfully terrible, just know it's Mariah being an actress playing a singer, enough said.

Summary: Charming and Effective
Review: This film suprised me. I have to say right off that the bad rap this film got upon it's release is undeserved. It's really a quiet little film with a nice story propelled by the charm of pop star Mariah Carey. It may be a standard and time worn rags to riches, broken home to pop star formula but it is done nicely. Since we know much of this is based on Mariah's childhood it is to the credit of everyone involved that it is not melodramatic but quietly restrained. In fact, some of the best moments in the film come during the early life of Billie Frank, played movingly by young Isabel Gomes, someone to watch for in the future.

The nice thing about this film is though it is following the basic formula of "A Star is Born" it doesn't try to be more than it is. Mariah's music is used effectively for atmosphere, but more as background to help drive the story rather than a gratuitous reason for her to sing. Max Beesley does a nice job as the DJ who discovers her and the romance is handled in a realistic manner.

Valarie Pettiford gives a nice performance in her brief screen time as the alcoholic mother who finally has to abandon young Billie in favor of the bottle. These memories shadow Billie throughout this film and the more touching moments come from this relationship. A scene where she passes her now successful daughter on the street and walks right by without recognizing her is quietly moving because we know how much it means to Billie.

Carey doesn't try to do more than she's capable of and blends right into the melancholy tone of this film. I won't give away the ending but a scene between she and her mother is quite moving and Mariah Carey does a pretty nice acting job here for a first timer. Much of the story here also may help explain why Carey still has trouble keeping it together in real life.

This is a pretty good little film to watch with your teenage daughter, who is probably a Mariah fan. Normally I would not feel it was a five star effort and would not review it. But the fact that it was so unfairly panned by critics, to the point of being a joke on talk shows, coupled with my enjoyment of it with my own daughter prompts me to give it five stars. This is a pretty nice little film. So there!

Summary: Sloppy Movie!
Review: I'm sorry to all the other Mariah Carey fans out there, but this movie was torture. It only sold tickets because of her name on the posters. The photograpy is confusing and hard-to-follow, the acting is basic. Yeah, we all know she has a great voice, but did they have to do it up like poor kid with drug-addicted mother, but she'll make it because of stupid luck. I laughed with all the predictable scenes they threw in! It wasn't all campy enough to make it funny though, which was sad because they took themslves seriously. Next time, Mariah, look for something with actual substance!

Summary: A pure hearted story
Review: Glitter....The big box office failure...Why was it so slammed by critics? People always have to tear apart anything anyone does just to have something negative to do. I don't think Mariah Carey did this movie expecting to win any big awards for it. It is simply a pure hearted story about a young talented singer trying to find her place in the world. This DVD was worth buying the day it was released especially for a fan like me. Watch it on a HDTV with surround sound and remember why we all fell in love with this talented singer in 1990. Give the movie a chance and decide for yourself.
