Summary: A Great Compilation Of An Incredible Duo!
Review: The public tends to forget the impact that the Carpenters had in the 1970's - selling over 100 million records. This set contains wonderfully remastered hits with the videos that accompanied them. Mind you, this was before songs were made into videos and the outfits were frightening (but then again, what were we wearing back then)? You can blame the A&M executives for the wholesome appearance of the duo. They thankfully were other than they appeared.The music is the main focus here and the videos are merely the means to show them. Sure, Karen's apparent health varies from song to song, but the voice is always strong. "The Carpenters: Close To You" makes a great video companion piece and sheds an enormous amount of light on who the Carpenters really were. However, if you just want the music, stick with this video. It's full of memories and great songs!

Review: This DVD is excellent! I love to see Karen & Richard singing together on the big screen. It is also nice to see some of the original "promotional films" that K&R did for their songs before the MTV era was born back in August of '81. This is a must for all Carpenteer's fans

Summary: Excellent DVD of previously released video album
Review: This dvd was first released in 1985 titled "Yesterday Once More." I had always held hope that this video would make it to the dvd format. I own both vhs and laser disc versions of this release and I must say, dvd makes a world of difference. Dvd audio is getting more popular, A&M is releasing a dvd audio of the Carpenters greatest hits titled "Gold" on October 22nd. As with all dvd converted video and film, the sound is excellent, the picture crisp. Not one change has been made to this dvd, the video was perfect the first time around and is now preserved for all time.

Summary: Wow - excellent quality
Review: This video is a collection of full length songs. The sound and video quality are exceptional. Crystal clear colors with no distortion. Most takes are studio with a few concert. Karen Carpenter is the best female singer in our generation - better than Barbara. Richard is a genius arranger. What a team.

Summary: To hear and see the Carpenters Masterpieces
Review: This Video is fantastic.Most of the Carpenters hits are in this collection. The sad part is seeing Karen so thin in one video,then looking great in another one.Even Richard looked bad around 1975,singing one of my favorites,"Only Yesterday." The best Karen looked on this tape was in 1977,two years after almost dying singing"All you get from Love is a Love song."I never seen her look so sexy and full of life.She was on her way to a full recovery.This video collection's wonderfull. We get to see the Carpenters from early TV specials,to the last video's the Carpenters recorded for the"Made in America"Album. Karen was in bad shape,and her eyes lost that glow.Its very sad to watch these last video's made by the Carpenters.One Video I would love to have is the Carpenters Christmas Special. I hope this comes out in the near future.I would love to have it along with this great video.

Summary: This Video Put Me on Top of the World
Review: This video is gorgeous. There is no voice-over narration, and no sub- or inter titles. The music and the pictures speak for themselves. I am not even going to attempt to talk about Karen's voice, the one beyond description, the once in an era, or possibly once in a cosmos, except to say that if you could fill a pitcher with it, I'd gladly pour it in my coffee any morning. Enough of that. Yes, we see Karen more and less thin. The songs are not presented in chronological order, probably to avoid the morbid display of Karen growing sicker and thinner by stages until her epitaph runs across the screen. This is a celebration of her life and talent. Rather than sadness in watching her grow thinner, there is joy in watching her discover herself and her place on the stage. The very first song "We've only Just Begun," (of course) is an early filming. She is wearing a gawd-awful outfit that emphasizes the extra weight she carries at her waist, and detracts from her attractive and well proportioned shoulders. This may well be the outfit that spurred the review that called her chubby, that started her dieting, and well, this is the disease that Jack built. Not to mention the fact that her hair looks as though it were styled by someone more accustomed to working with Afghan hounds. What really made me cringe, though, is how dammed uncomfortable she looks up there. She tries a couple of tentative gestures, that come off so amateurish my heart breaks. She looks to the right once or twice, but mostly stares in the direction of the camera. She smiles, but doesn't move with the music. In fact, she makes no use of the stage at all. It is as though her shoes are nailed to the floor. By the time she sings "Superstar," she has learned to wear a loose fitting dress that hides her body, and to stand in low light in a tight follow spot. And to use her face, and the stage to express the music. Once she is thin, she is happily out in full light. Half the time she may not look so healthy, but she has matured as a performer. She is nearly two-dimensional when she sings "Top of the World," but her dress is beautiful, her hair is beautiful, she knows how to hold a microphone, she uses the stage, she moves with she music, teases Richard, smiles, tosses her head half coquettishly, half wistfully. She is in control at every moment. She really does seem to be on top of the world. Up until the end credits run, and an instrumental "Close to You" plays slowly while more videos and photos of Karen run, and finally the epitaph, the video is joyful. I usually stop it before the second to last song ("Close to You") , and come away feeling on top of the world myself. Yes, Karen is a great and tragic loss to the world, but we still have our memories-- and our videos.
