Rating: Summary: Neil does it again Review: Satisfying, thrilling, outstanding songs, beautiful voice, great harmonies, pure joy - way to go Neil!!! Like many of the other reviewers, it baffles me that America has not discovered this outstanding songwriter, singer and musician. He is a treasure. "Seven Worlds" is a beautiful memorial which in many ways is a tribute to Neil Finn. The musicians who joined him obviously recognize his talents. Their appreciation is evident in the performances.Watching this DVD is a wonderful reminder and keepsake of those live Neil Finn shows, solo, with Crowded House and the Enz, where he plays his songs with so many subtle variations. This remains a testament to his talent. No one who watches this will be disappointed. There's something for everyone, old songs reworked with great vigor: "Take a Walk", with Eddie Vedder is magic, "Angel's Heap", with brother Tim, is wonderful, the Smith's "There is a Light" is amazing. The new songs "Anytime", "Turn and Run", demonstrate that he is only getting better. This is a DVD that is not to be missed.
Rating: Summary: Add to your Cart if you want Quality Music Review: Serving as the companion to his new live album, _7 Worlds Collide_, this DVD captures master songwriter Finn with his "all star" band with raw enthusiasm and energy. If you have the live album, you really have to purchase this DVD. It shows brief interviews/segments with Finn, Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr, etc. leading up to the week of concerts in Auckland. In addition, at over two hours in length, the DVD features songs that are not on the CD, such as "Driving Me Mad", "Four Seasons", "Fall at your Feet", and more. I could go on and on about the quality of Finn's songwriting, but hopefully if you are reading this you are savvy enough to know all that already. That said, if you are a fan of Finn's solo work, his work with Crowded House, or his work with Split Enz, you will definitely not be disappointed with this DVD.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Music, less than wonderful video Review: The music on this DVD is wonderful, and I think the best way to enjoy it is to put the DVD on, but leave your TV off. The visuals are at best comforting - at worst they are horribly annoying. Whoever directed this seems like an undergraduate film student; poor cutting, never heard of a cross-fade,likes jarring effects, when in doubt loves to cut to the wide shot. The camera operators had trouble focussing...
But the music. We all know that Neil Finn is a pre-eminent songwriter, and his songs are timeless. Bringing in a hand-picked group of musicians was his stroke of genius. And having his son's band play his (and his brother Tim's) songs, sung by Eddie Vedder, works really well.
So 5 stars for the music and the performance, minus 1 for the video.
If you're a fan of Crowded House, Split Enz, the Finn brothers, you will love the aural pleasures offered by this - and let's face it, having the music surround you in a home theatre is SUCH a treat.
Rating: Summary: absolutely FANTASTIC !!!! Review: This is the best music DVD I own - really. Both audio and video are great, and the set is just amazing. I can't stop playing it - I think I'm addicted.
Rating: Summary: muted joy Review: You have/will read plenty of good on this DVD, and most of it is true. But I am greatly disappointed with several aspects of it. Too many shots of peoples back. Hardly any good footage of Ed O'briens guitar playing - I want to see him getting some of those bizarre sounds. Same for Johnny Marr's guitar playing. Would it of killed them to show either of those guys for a couple of minutes? And the shots you do get cut so quick by the time you get excited and sit up to watch close, and they cut to someones back again. Blah. Best moments are when fewer people are on stage, and they aren't cutting around so much. I had the cd (import) for months before the DVD was released in the states, and was just expecting more from this. Was very disappointed when I first saw it. That said, it still is very enjoyable. The music, cast, performace are all excellent. The mix is very basic, and doesn't add much to the experience. The Exception being some good vocal seperation on the duet songs (my personal highlight is Angels Heap with just Tim & Neil together). There must be 23 or so songs on it, stretching about 2 hours 15 minutes. It is good, but also disappoint knowing that simple editing is the difference between good and ground breaking.
