Summary: THE BEST DVD I OWN
Review: This DVD is phenomenal. It's no coincidence that so many reviewers have given it 5 stars. It's a documentary (and concert) of Sting and his band rehearsing for 2 weeks to play an intimate concert at Sting's house in Italy. The concert was scheduled for Sept 11, 2001. As you can imagine, the band is shown dealing with the tragic events of that day, wondering whether to go on with the show. You will see that their performance that night is extremely heartfelt and soulful.
I particularly love the first song they perform, "Fragile." That is one of Sting's best songs and the lyrics sound as if they were written for Sept 11th, when in fact the song was written many years before. Most of the songs are performed with a jazzy, acoustic feel. The musicianship is top-notch. If you are a musician like I am then you will really love the DVD (Christian McBride, Chris Botti, Manu Katche, etc...). It shows the musicians rehearsing for the concert and it's really inspiring.
The picture and audio are superb on the DVD. The only reason I gave it 5 stars is because the Amazon.com doesn't let you give a higher rating. If you like Sting, if you like Soul/Jazz, if you like good live music, I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL LOVE this DVD. Well worth the price. Sting is THE MAN!!!!!!!!!

Summary: New arrangements, the same high quality music and band
Review: This DVD is the companion to the album of the same name with which Sting came back on September 11 (he respectfully dedicates it to the victims of the tragedy). This time around he revisits tunes from all his periods (The Police, early and late solo material) but with a very jazzy feel to most of the songs. What can be said about this concert video, that has not been said about Sting at some point? It's brilliant: he grabs his songs and virtually reinvents them, to the point where they sound almost like different songs.

Particularly enjoyable I found his beautiful rendition of the Police classics "Don't stand so close to me" and "Roxanne" as well as the tracks included from his least popular album, 'Mercury Falling' and the mix of "A Thousand Years" and "Perfect Love... Gone Wrong," much in the same style of his earlier live double-album. Interesting results his Traffic-like version of his very own "If you love somebody set them free"... Grrrrooovy!!!! New tracks anyone? Yes! "Dienda" in the style of his interpretation of the Zappa song, "The Idiot Bastard song" which some lucky people were able to hear back during some sessions he played in Chicago several years ago.

To complement the music, you get a very nice 50 min+ intro telling the tale behind the musicians and each of the songs (how they were originally put together and how they accomplished the version recorded for this concert). The intro interweaves with the concert tracks by means of a cue you are given on the screen to play the corresponding song, so that you can "see" what it is that Sting and his band are talking about. Overall, one of those jewels that oughta become part of your music DVD collection.

Summary: Not the whole show.
Review: This is not even close to the whole show. How lame is that. Wake up Sting, and give your fans their money's worth.

Summary: All This Time...
Review: This is presented in anamorphic widescreen. The documentary and concert are presented beautifully. Don't let the label on the box deter you this is a loaded disc clocking in at nearly 3 hours and includes songs not on the US cd.

Summary: The best music DVD I own
Review: This is the first time I have felt compelled to write an Amazon review, but I feel that such an exceptional effort should be recognized. The musicianship of all involved is spectuacular, the sound is amazing, and the synergy of the band and Sting as the concert progresses is thrilling. Especially memorable is Hounds of Winter- where you experience vicariously what it feels like to be part of a perfect performance, that amazes even those involved.Thank you to all involved, for creating such a fantastic DVD!

Summary: Sting in total control
Review: This is without a doubt the best DVD concert available at this time; the documentary footage is both informative and entertaining. The concert performance is outstanding the band is tight and all shades and feelings are expressed by the musicians there are no bad performances. The sound and picture Quality is second only to Steele Dan's Two Against Nature DVD. I want to see a lot more of this type of DVD...

Summary: STING IS AN ARTIST IN THE TRUEST SENSE
Review: This review has been locked up in my heart for a long time. It is one of those enormously emotional products I love that I feel inadequate to review; however, that is the best reason for reviewing it.

I believe most people know that this concert was held in Sting's home in Italy, that he and his gifted band had been practicing for less than 2 weeks and that they had to decide whether to go on and do the show knowing of the horrific events of that day (September 11, 2001.) Besides the music, their discussion of this decision is one of the highlights of this DVD. "Fragile," dedicated to the victims is the opening song and it is played and sung PERFECTLY with tenderness, respect and musical brilliance. The entire DVD sound and picture quality is second to none I've ever seen, the songs are slightly different than we've heard them (more jazzy/bluesy) and it is a change that shows how much Sting has grown as an person, not just an artist. The band he has put together is entirely and impressively gifted, coming from around the world--Brazil, Argentina, Algeria, France, England, North America and more. Each one adds to the magical eclecticism of the music and atmosphere. They comprise an entertaining and interesting group of musicians to watch AND listen to.

I have always respected Sting but never so much than after seeing this. The DVD is absolutely flawless. I can't give a higher recommendation. This is my highest recommendation. On a 1-10 scale with 1 the worst and 10 the best. This tops even a ten. There are really no words to express all of my feelings. STING...ALL THIS TIME must be EXPERIENCED. Whether or not you are a fan of Sting is irrelevant, because AFTER you watch this you WILL BE.

It has one of the best menus I've ever seen with loads of options: to play the documentary, the concert or both at the same time with a feature to hit "S" (enter) after each practiced song (that was chosen to use in the concert--obviously in keeping respect for the ones that had lost their lives, many tunes were omitted in the concert that are on the warmup/practice/jam sessions. Which are, by the way, enjoyable to watch.)

What I want to emphasize the most is the way Sting starts off somber and respectful and ends up letting himself go inside the music whichs floods his soul with JOY, which, in turn, the rapport between him and his band sets up a chain reaction that fills everyone playing and listening with JOY. THAT, my friends, is what Music is all About. This is so inspiring to me and I believe it will be to you too.

Sting said it best, "You know, we were all put on this earth to be happy. We all deserve to be happy. They can't kill our joy. We can't let them do that."

KEEP SMILIN' AND SOAR!
SOARING HEART

Summary: Beyond Excellent. Loved the anamorphic aspect ratio
Review: To say anymore about how Sting is just brilliant as a musician would be a waste of time. We already knew THAT. I own absolutely every cd from him and the Police. The thing is that he just keep's surprising us. Thank you, please don't quit. The main reason of my review is to thank whoever came with the great idea of doing the concert, AND the backstage footage (which by the way is one of the best I've seen for this type of release) on a widescreen anamorphic aspect ratio. I have a projector with 92" widescreen movie screen, so you can imagine my delight when I pressed the play button and I didn't see stretched images or black bars at the sides. GOOD JOB. In regards to sound quality, well, enough said. If you are interested on this DVD, BUY IT, you will not be disapointed. I just which that they had released the Brand New Day concert DVD on widescreen anamorphic format. Anyway, I own that one too, and I think that musicwise is just as good, just different. BUY THEM BOTH. My hat off to STING.
