Summary: A Incredible Experience !!!!
Review: This DVD is the perfect live disk. The sound is far beyond anything I have heard before. The show was perfectly recorded and mixed. If you have surround sound you are in for a real treat. The surround sound is very enjoyable. The filming is also in my opinion perfect. The atmosphere with the lights and editing make this DVD by far the best live DVD I have ever seen. Now to the music. The first set is mostly accoustic songs from the Damnation CD. Ten seconds into the DVD and I knew this show was going to be something incredible. Opeth come across live ten times better than they do on CD. Not only are the songs done perfectly, the songs are also done with a somber modesty. Opeth really capture the old " before they were famous " feel to their live act. Set two is the more heavy death vocal tunes that most Opeth fans were waiting for. This set is also done very well. The vocals are great and I give them credit for being able to be in the midst of a furious pounding moment then drop the tune down to a light accoustic feel without disturbing the epic feel of the song. Truly impressive. My only complaint about this DVD is the commentary at the end of the DVD of the making of the last two CD's. It would have been great if whoever edited it would have ligned up the sound with the video. I feel like I'm watching a kung fu movie with bad over dubbs. It makes it hard to watch. But it still is great to see. If you have the least bit interest in this band or this type of music I strongly suggest buying this DVD. I feel it is Metal at its best. This DVD was done right, and that is a rare occurence when it comes to metal bands putting out live shows on DVD or tape. Buy it today. You will not regret it....

Summary: A must own for Opeth fans...
Review: Opeth never cease to amaze me; I love every record in their back catalogue of works, and obviously I jumped at the chance to purchase their DVD "Lamentations ~ Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire 2003" after missing the chance to see them live not long ago.

The disc consists of two sets; the first focusing on their "Damnation" release, including all of its content. The second is focused on some of their heavier works from "Deliverance" and "Blackwater Park". Although it is unfortunate that they are limited to music released on the Koch label (I would have loved to have seen songs from "Morningrise" or "My Arms Your Hearse"), the performance is already so stunning it really is non-issue.

Every song is performed beautifully; perhaps even besting the studio versions of the music. I especially enjoyed Lamentations' version of "Closure", which received an especially large dose energy.

The disc also contains a (fairly lengthy) documentary detailing the making of "Deliverance" and "Damnation", with interviews of all of Opeth's members at the time of recording, and with the producer of the albums. It also depicts some in-studio scenes - all in all, very well put together.

I've heard a lot of live performances before, and (especially) at this asking price, I wasn't expecting a lot from the audio or video quality, but they've really outdone themselves with this. The performance is mixed wonderfully: in Dolby Digital stereo, bass drums have a tight, solid kick to them, but bass guitar is never lost in the shuffle. Every guitar note comes through clearly, and all the vocals are treated with the same amount of care. Those of you who have DTS-capable hardware will be treated to even more spacious sound; considering that it's almost difficult to tell that this is a live performance at times is truly a testament to the care put into this work. Hats off to the sound crew.

The video quality is equally notable, and is excellent across the board, though there are a few signs of graininess in high-motion sequences or with a lot of light. The performance, presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, produces some very minor scaling artifacts on my standard-definition test hardware (an Xbox being used as the DVD player, and a 27" Sony Wega television), but still looked excellent. If you have a widescreen high-definition set however, you'll be treated to an incredibly crisp, rich picture that rivals (perhaps even exceeds) that of any live performance DVD I've seen thus far.

All in all, this disc is a must own for any Opeth fan: a stunning performance and a superb technical presentation come together to create something that, to me, seems almost magical in its presentation. Next time Opeth comes around, I will definitely make it a point to go see them. Five stars.

Summary: Simply amazing...
Review: I can only reiterate what others have already said. Opeth is the most brilliant band on the metal scene, Deliverance and Damnation, both excellent albums from opposite sides of the tracks that will move you with their emotional intelligent production, and crush you with their brutality.
Any Opeth fan should not be without this.

Summary: Masterful Death by Metal!
Review: Opeth blows away the viewer with an AMAZING mellow set from their Damnation album in it's ENTIRITY. After the mellow set, the change set-up on stage to permit some wicked metal. They play the length of two actual shows! As usual, Opeth hits every single note and sends you on a journey that is unexplainable.

Also available is a 65 minute documentary. This is a must for any musician or person that would like to get to know Opeth better. In the age of one hit wonders and crappy music, valuing the BAND not the song is what makes for true enjoyment. Opeth are an amazing group of pure musicians. They are not in the business for the glamor. The documentary is high quality and thourough.

The sound is simply the best that I have from any music DVD that I own. The musicality of Opeth rivals that of the best in the metal music industry. I hope that whoever buys this DVD has a good sound system. This DVD is too high quality to be played on computer speakers or TV speakers. (it can be played of course, but why waste your time with such a masterful DVD)

10+ out of 10 in my book. Unforgettable!

Summary: The Best at their Best
Review: This DVD is hands down the best concert DVD I own. I have seen Opeth in concert one time and own all of their studio material. They are one the most spectacular bands I have ever seen. Personally, I prefered the concert I attended, but this DVD is still really good. I just wish they would of had played some of their older material. All and all my suggestion to any fan of Opeth, buy this DVD, you won't be disappointed.

Summary: "In my time of need"
Review: 4.5 stars. This is a great show! I just wanted to get that out before any criticism dampens my spirit. The show is divided into 2 sets, the first containing 9 songs, 8 of which are from their most recent album, Damnation. The concert begins fine, with the first 3 songs played professionally and admirably. But when Opeth unveils their extended version of the song "Closure" I was positive that these guys comprise one of the greatest bands in the world. Of the remaining 5 songs there are shining moments strewn throughout, the final song of the first set giving a false sense of what is to come next: Progressive Death Metal. The second set begins magnificently with "Master's Apprentices" from the album Deliverance, and the momentum is sustained with "The Drapery Falls" which follows. But the cresecendo comes with the next 2 tracks. Combined, watching "Deliverance" and "The Leper Affinity" played live is both mesmerizing and awesome. Their technical musicianship is incredible to behold! There being no clear way for them to top that climax, they mellow a bit for the closing song, "A Fair Judgement." All in all, this was a superb concert, and had me buzzing for hours afterward. But the actual DVD has its tedious moments. The long pauses between some of the songs were slightly annoying. Apparently, somebody forgot to tighten the editing to help make the show flow more smoothly. While most of the editing was excellent, there were moments of confusion with out-of-focus cameras and confusing fast-cuts. Some of the cuts were so fast I had a hard time figuring out which band member was being shown. Sometimes the edit would contain only the instrument. Now for the Documentary. It is a solid, behind-the-scenes look at this superlative band creating in the studio, and interviews with each band member. With the individual interviews you get a real sense that all these guys (let's not forget Steve Wilson) really care deeply about what they are creating. It is truly refreshing to here such authentic honesty and enthusiasm. Overall, this DVD is a requirement for all Opeth fans. A chronicle of why this band is so highly revered.
