Summary: The Greatest and Best DVD in the World
Review: Kyle Gass and Jack Black are two of the funniest guys around and together they form Tenacious D., an accoustic musical comedy act, the likes of which the world has never seen. This is one of the best-priced fully loaded two disc sets available. They crammed more laughs on these discs than most comedy movies could dream of having. There is a live concert in England, where apparantly they have a strong following since the audience seems to know all the words to their songs. All of their legendary HBO short films are here in all their comedic glory. The short films are definately their funniest material and get funnier everytime you watch them. Some of their humor is sick and not for all tastes. There is also funny backstage tour footage and videos for all of their cult hits like "Tribute","Wonderboy" and the immortal "F@#k Her Gently" and even funny making of segments for the videos. These guys were an acquired taste for me but I am now psycho for their comedic brilliance.

Summary: Raunchy musical fun!
Review: "Tenacious D: TCMW" offers a sick and twisted look into the world of an underachieving yet completely committed rock duo, consisting of current movie megastar Jack Black and his musically talented sidekick Kyle "KG" Gass. Disc One features an hour-long concert for London's Brixton Academy, as well as all six episodes of the 1999 HBO comedy series. The concert is a brilliant spotlight for the boys' true talent. Plus, it was nice to see that the D's following spans across the Atlantic, as audience members loudly sang along with nearly every song. The episodes were equally hilarious, showing the D's humble beginnings as bar singers. They also let viewers in on the origins of a few of their songs. My favorite was the episode featuring Lee, Tenacious D's superfan (and song namesake). The band actually ends up stalking HIM, instead of vice versa!

Disc Two is labeled "For Psycho Fans Only," and it features three HBO short films, a studio documentary, TV appearances, and music videos complete with behind the scenes mayhem. The shorts stand out on this disc because they go beyond the series episodes and plunge into the realm of disgusting. I had to turn away from the screen in a few instances, I must admit. But they are funny, in the most naughty sense. The studio documentary is less musical footage and more of the boys just messing around and talking smack about each other. I guess this is what happens when you give the D a camera. I had seen some of the TV appearances and videos before, but I enjoyed the extra glimpses nonetheless.

If you have a Tenacious D fan in your life, I recommend this as a gift for their next birthday/Christmas/wedding/bar mitzvah. But if you think this is fun family viewing, think again. If you won't let your teenager listen to their album, then you probably won't want them subjected to this even spicier DVD. This is clearly for adults only. To mature fans of the D: laugh along!

Summary: Highly Recommended!
Review: Being a big fan of Jack Black's movies, my friend bought his band's self-titled album, Tenacious D. I thought it was OK, a few histerical moments, but that's it. So I didn't really want to buy this DVD, but instead borrowed it from another band. I'm glad I did.

While I didn't enjoy their album that much, I might have to go take another listen after this, because it is downright hilarious. The concert kind of bored me but that was probably because I wasn't too familar with their songs. But the HBO TV shows make it worth the (low) price of admission alone. They're f*ckin' hilarious. Funny stuff. My favorite episode would probably have to be "Angel in Disguise" and the karate scene. Genius.

The second disc is for "Psycho Fans Only", and while I did not consider myself one at the time, I watched it anyway. It's packed with the hilarious video for "Tribute" as well as a making off and the funny yet beautiful video and making of of "Tribute". It also comes with a animated video of "F*ck Her Gently", in which mini angels of JB and KG instruct Satan on what the ladies like. Also on the disc are TV appearences with them performing "Tribute" on MAD TV, performing "Wonderboy" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and their little sketch on Crank Yankers. There's also a half hour long On the Road documentary as well as an In the Studio documentary.

Even if you absolutely hate their music, I do suggest you check this Tenacious Dvd out if you're looking for some laughs. You might even think again about buying that album...

Summary: ALL HAIL THE D !!!
Review: True greatness. If you like the album, you'll love the DVD. Now we can enjoy the episodes in digital quality rather than a poor bootleg tape of the HBO shows. The price is fair too.

Just one word of warning. This is not for kids or the faint of heart. JB's BJ and Butt Baby are downright gross (but still funny in a dark, sick way).

JB and KG are hugely talented. KG wails on the guitar. I'm afraid, however, that the D will never get the respect they deserve because of the label of "comic-rock duo." They will forever be compared to the likes of Spinal Tap and Iggy Pop because of the material they choose to perform. Personally, I'd like to see these guys lay down some serious rock (which they are totally capable of), rather than just joke about rocking all the time.

I can't wait until the D comes to town again. Until then, I'll just have to watch these discs over and over and over...

Summary: Orgasmic.
Review: This guy I barely knew bought me this as a present. At first I thought it was kind of creepy given that I barely knew him and he was kind of overweight and had some acne and lived on the poor side of town and here was me, this six foot goddess with a gold flaxen mane (...) and a wealthy Father who owned a brewery. I threw it on the DVD player and within two hours I was totally addicted. (...) Recommended.

Summary: HIDDEN FEATURES!!!
Review: Tenacious D RULES!!! I seen them for the first time at like 3 in the morning on HBO in the early 90's and fell in love with the 15 minute show back then. Since then, I have become a huge Jack Black and D fan. This DVD is AWESOME with loads of stuff, special features and even some very cool hidden "EASTER EGGS". Here they are:

Insert the second disc of the DVD set and from the Main Menu highlight the 'In The Studio' menu entry. Now press the 'Left' arrow key on your remote control to highlight a cactus, which gives you access to a TV commercial for 'The Osbournes,' Tenacious D-style.

Now highlight the menu entry called 'TV Appearances' and press the 'Right' arrow key on your remote control to highlight another cactus. It will give you access to an alternate TV commercial for 'The Osbournes,' Tenacious D-style, of course.

Now, go down to the 'Music Videos' menu entry and press the 'Left' arrow key and a skull will light up. Hit 'Enter' and you will see a commercial for the Tenacious D CD.

ENJOY!!!

Summary: Amateur guitarists should love the D.
Review: Like so many reviewers here, I had heard "Tribute" on numerous occasions, and was only vaguely aware it was by the band Tenacious D. Apparently within the last year, the D were receiving substantial press in guitar-related publications, something I noticed flipping through the rags. At that same time, a friend mentioned that the D had "finally" released their "complete masterworks," a goof my normally-slow self picked up on: Hadn't they only released one album previously? Appreciating the gag, being a huge fan of acoustic rock, and being a huge fan of all of JB's performances (High Fidelity, Saving Silverman, School of Rock, etc.) I picked up this combo, and I was floored. The D are excellent. Any amateur guitarist (i.e., anyone who loves to play, devotes most of their spare time to it, but still fears to give up their bread-and-buter day job to make a professional go at it) should love the D. KG's playing is superlative, though it is still rough enough to be rock, though he shouldn't be slighted for it. Remember how many flubs and clinkers Page left behind on albums and in concert? (And if you listen carefully, there's even a missed note in Eddie Van Halen's instrumental, "Eruption"). KG is at that wonderful point where his technical and songwriting range is broad, but still very attainable for the devoted player. Between that and his ability to add satisfying vocal harmonies to JB's lead voice, he is at least a good, if not great, musician. Although JB's forte is not his playing, as it can be a little rough (and his playing on the HBO specials is usually hard enough to "overdrive" his cedar-topped guitar, causing substantial tone-bleeding and lack of clarity), his vocal display shows he has taken his lessons well from acoustic rock's catalogue: the lyrics, the melody, the embellishments, the vamps--all great stuff. To top it off, for about 80% of the performances, both artists' vocals really cut in all the right ways--Jack's voice shows great intensity and range and has that wonderful crunch when the intensity is racheted up. Kyle's backing and counterpoint vocals complement Jack's lead deliciously with a clear, soft tone. The other 20%, the guys appear to be off just a little, either in single performance or harmony, but it is not significant and is barely perceptible. But both are twice the performers that I could ever be, with their musical abilities and something nearly forgotten here . . . their comedy. They are full-throttle hilarious. They remind the fun-loving amateur guitarist who doesn't dream of stadium crowds of what is attainable, and they have fun and make loud laughter doing it. A must-have on so many levels.

Summary: Experience the D!!
Review: I have to admit, I had heard of Tenacious D, and had even heard "Tribute" on the radio but hadn't thought much about the band other than the fact that actor Jack Black was supposedly in it. That all changed when a friend of mine got me to watch the HBO shorts on Disc 1 with him. I bought my own copy of the DVD that very day. Since then, my life has never been the same. I have never laughed so hard, I have never rocked so hard. JB and KG are geniuses, both comically and musically. The HBO shorts are hilarious, the concert in London is extremely entertaining and the videos and bizarre short films on Disc 2 (for pyscho fans only) are truly out of this world. If you love to laugh and to rock (at the same time) then Tenacious D is a must buy. Consider me a new converted pyscho fan.
