Summary: Coltrane! Enough said!
Review: As I understand it, Coltrane could have taken some time to be interviewd. While I'd have loved to hear what he had to say, I am giving this five stars.
With all three selections, he is clearly conscious of the time constraints; yet the artistry is not in any way compromised. Impressions was great, especially with the duet between Trane and Elvin Jones. I've always loved Afro Blue; and he plays it beautifully. And Alabama makes you feel the pain that inspired the song; the reaction to the bombing of a black church in Alabama. One is especially touched by the look on Jone's face at the end of the song while Coltrane is making his statement.
What words exist that could describe the experience of listening to Coltrane, or watching him as he created his masterworks? His music is one of humanity's greatest treasures.

Review: i couldn't wait to see this.John Coltrane on tape is a real treat.his rich tone and quality on disc or tape is great but seeing it takes it onto a whole different Level.Mccoy Tyner gets down.the whole group is tight.a must view.Genius all over this tape.

Summary: Only 30 minutes of Coltrane
Review: It is wonderful that we have a video of one of the Jazz greats. The problem is you get mostly the back of Elvin's head, good camera work on McCoy, distant or too close camera angles on John and a bass solo. I am grateful to have witnessed Coltrane but felt wanting more since he plays a 1/3 of the 30 minutes.

Review: One of the greatest jazz videos available. John plays great, and this is one of McCoy's finest performances also. Nice that this was re-released, since it's their only US video performance. Very nice!

Review: Para o admirador de Coltrane este vídeo é "malhado". A fita gasta quase o mesmo tempo para falar sobre a série Casual Jazz quanto dá aos músicos para tocarem. Takes curtíssimos completamente diferentes do trabalho que Coltrane fazia na época. Recomendo "The world according to John Coltrane" que tem takes filmados no mesmo dia, no mesmo estúdio mas com takes muuuito maiores. Para o colecionador das raras imagens de Coltrane, no entanto, vale a pena gastar alguns bucks com esta fita "palha".

Summary: See Trane Live!
Review: There aren't many chances to see Coltrane and his quartet in a live setting, so you have to take it when you get it. This is a great performance that leaves you wanting more. I already knew Trane and Jones were musical geniuses, but I didn't realize how good Tyner and Garrison were until I saw this tape. Both throw down some inspiring solos. Check out Garrisons extended bass solo. With sweat just pouring off his face, you can hear him verbalizing the solo while he plays it. Only 3 complaints: 1. Last song is cut before its complete. 2. Show is only 30 minutes. 3. Its put out by Rhino records. In my experience, you are guaranteed to have less than great sound quality when you see Rhino on the label. Its not horrible on this tape, but it could be better.

Review: This half-hour recording features John Coltrane and the "classic quartet" (coltrane, tyner, garrison, and jones) at their peak in 1963. A good amount of video time is devoted to each member, naturally with more on coltrane. Three selections are performed-- Afro Blue, Alabama, and Impressions, and although it seems like a little bit is clipped from the beginning and ending of the first and last, Ralph Gleason's show lived up to it's reputation in letting the artist play what they want for as long as they want to... at one point garrison goes off on a lengthy but awe-inspiring solo that gives the impression that it would have kept going forever had coltrane not jumped in. All in all, an essential purchace for any Coltrane fan, or for anyone simply wishing to get a taste of the power with which the group performed. I'm definately looking forward to seeing more of this series.
