Summary: Must have DVD for the serious Krall fan!
Review: I was floored by the dynamite performance put on by Diana Krall in this live DVD. Her voice was dead-on for every song, and her piano improvisation was inspiring. Her love of the music really jumps out on this one.

Also, you get a sense of what she's really like as she plays some of her latest and greatest renditions. There is a lot of passion in her performance. The pre-performance takes are also nice to watch as are the bonus videos included on this DVD.

Make sure you have 2 hours to spare before starting the DVD...you'll want to watch this all the way through.

Summary: Is she for real?
Review: Wow! This is a must have DVD for anyone that enjoys good music. Play it in DTS and you'll feel the full effect of Ms. Kralls voice. I got Love Scenes in DTS after watching this one. The best!

Summary: She is just so cool!
Review: I was fortunate enough to recently see Diana Krall in her first ever Melbourne show. Wow! I have been a fan for some years and to hear her perform live is an amazing experience. This DVD features a nice mix of ballads and standards and goes very well on a surround sound system. Diana Krall is a great performer and would have to be a marketing dream.

Summary: Tremendous Entertainment Value for Jazz Fans Old and New
Review: Okay, here goes. I read a few of the other reviews before buying this dvd, and despite the attempts of the few negative reviews to dissuade me, I prevailed with my decision to purchase it, mainly because I have been enjoying a couple of Diana Krall cd's for a few years now. My wife and I just finished watching and listening to this dvd, and I felt compelled to share my thoughts in this, my first review on amazon.com.

Buying this dvd was the right call. If you are a jazz fan, buy this dvd. If you have never heard of, or are unfamiliar with Diana Krall (and that's highly unlikely if in fact you are a jazz fan), buy this dvd. If you don't even own any jazz records or cd's, but think you might like to sample some jazz, buy this dvd. Heck, if you don't even yet own a dvd player, this is reason enough to go get one! Go ahead, this review will be here when you're done buying it, then you can finish reading it while your dvd (and perhaps dvd player as well) is on its way to your front door.

Why is it good? A few key reasons. First, the 17 songs and 130 minutes on this dvd are classic jazz standard tunes, with a good mixture of slow and fast tempos. For you jazz newbies reading this, "standards" means the songs that Ms. Krall so tastefully offers her unique and sultry renditions of are selected from those "tried and true" tunes that have been around for many years, having been sung by singers ranging from Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, to Jon Bon Jovi and Bono ("Under My Skin," a duet he did with the Chairman). In other words, these are songs that your parents and grandparents listened and danced to, and perhaps still do, but with Ms. Krall's very exciting and fresh perspective. Next, there is Diana's voice. Chances are that you have at least heard Diana Krall's phenomenal voice if you've read this far. Let me tell you that she was completely on top of her game when she performed this concert, from the first song to the last. And, as an added bonus, you get to see many close ups of her singing and playing (which by the way, she does VERY well) in addition to hearing her. Her sultry voice is well matched not only by her pretty face, but her chops on the huge Steinway Grand she is playing. This lady can play! Her solo on "Indeed I Do" is arpeggio-rich and exciting. The sound engineers were also on top of their game, as the sound and mix are top notch. Even the camera angles were well done.

Finally, there's the band. This is where my comments will possibly lose you jazz neophytes (but I hope not). As Ms. Krall herself shares with the audience in between the first few tunes, she is thrilled if not humbled a bit by the quality of the musicianship on stage with her for this concert. The rhythm section (acoustic bass and drums) consists of Ms. Krall's musical mentors (yes she fell in love with jazz at an early age) idols, John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton, respectively. And Anthony Wilson is one wicked electric jazz guitarist whose incredible playing is featured on most of the tunes. This guy can do it all, which is not an everyday occurrence. Check him out on "Indeed I Do," and the interplay between him and drummer Jeff Hamilton on "Devil May Care." The balance of the band includes John Pisano, a fine acoustic guitarist and Paulinho DaCosta on percussion. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the European Symphony Orchestra, which is tastefully featured on several tunes, most notably on a bossa-nova version of the famous Burt Bacharach tune, "The Look of Love."

Perhaps the greatest thing for all of us is that Diana Krall is quite young, so we have much more to look forward to from her well of talent. This is a dvd that you will enjoy the first time, and even more over time...

Review: I would give this one more than 5 stars if that were possible. I enjoyed every minute of the concert as well as the bonus videos and rehearsal excerpts. What talent!

Summary: If you buy any music DVD this year, then buy this one!
Review: Simply one of the most emotionally moving concerts I've ever seen... excellent video direction & production to sync with music recording of this concert...

the camera positioning (angles, shots, composition) in conjunction with music performance are the most brilliant that I've ever seen ... the shots of Diana singing with either the drummer , or the bass player, framed in the same shot, with perfect clarity and depth of field ..these are the shots that demonstrate cinematic excellence ...

I hate to say it, but it's DVD's like this one that make you realize that the truly inspired live video music recordings are clearly superior to paying for a bad seat at a live concert ... of course, the DVD would not replace having an excellent seat at the concert!

Just when you think that it couldn't get any better than the song she just finished singing in the show, Diana comes thru with a another heart stopper ... personal favs include:

- the look of love

- under my skin (Diana has arguably put forth the best version of the classic Cole Porter song that anyone ever has , which is saying a lot)

- east of the sun, west of the moon

she also performs killer intepretations of "maybe you'll be there" , and "cry me a river"...

this woman is blessed with incredible talent, beauty, and presence ...

this concert is made very special by the musicians in her jazz group and the European Symphony Orchestra , and of course Claus Ogerman in a guest role ..

Brava! Diana, Brava!

Summary: I'm sorry guys, this is NOT jazz!
Review: Sorry enthusiastic guys but this is not jazz, this is elevator music. Sure great musicians are involved, but the concept behind the project is not an art one but a marketing one!! You have been fooled!! In the end this is only a product, with great bucks behind , but with no soul, no blood, no sweat, no tears, no respect, no dignity, no truth. It is just a fine homework from a musical standpoint. Diana is a sort of Kenny G in jazz. She can play, but she listen carefully to what market people says her. Moreover she has a flat, inexpressive voice. Some songs are well arranged (East of the sun, Let's fall in love..) but there is really an enormous number of ballads.. The intent to get the attention of an uneducated audience is absolutly clear. I'm tired of listening to enthusiastic comments about Diana's work from people who really don't know nothing about jazz and it's meanings. I repeat it's elevator music. In the end for example could you compare this live music to the one played by Parker/Gillespie/Powell/Roach/Mingus in the cd "The Quintet" in some aspects? I don't think so. that is jazz, this is not.
No, No Diana, you're not fooling me.

Summary: A MUST HAVE...
Review: Diana Krall has outdone herself... This is the Ultimate jazz DVD to own. Diana Krall is not afraid to share the spotlight. In fact, she enjoys it in this DVD with guitarist Anthony Wilson, bassist John Clayton, and Jeff Hamilton on drums. She looks like she is enjoying every minute of this concert.. and the sound from this fantastic group shows it. I was in a state of awe(yeah, my jaw was dropped, saying WOW) throughout this concert. I have watched this DVD five times already and am still amazed at the musician-ship and love betweeen these artists. Diana Krall has to be the most beautiful jazz artist out in todays jazz(or even pop) world, but her artistry of the keyboard and love for the music outshines her beauty(barely). If there is ANY jazz DVD to buy, THIS IS IT....
