Summary: Totally awesome. A must buy for all Dream Theater fans.
Review: I always wanted to hear Dream Theater live, but could never seem to get to one of their shows. Being a Dream Theater fan for many years, I ran right out and bought this DVD. All I can say is that I was totally blown away. I always pictured all of the guys sitting down in front of sheet music reading what they are playing because the music is so elaborate and intricate. That is not the case. The members of the band are standing on stage just basically jamming out having a good time and the music is note for note incredible. Being a musician too, I am just blown away of the talent of these individuals. Amazing!

Summary: So very average...
Review: Watching and listening to Dream Theater for over ten years has given me a good idea of when they are good and when they are not. The music here is, for the most part, very good as one would expect from DT. The video is more of a mixed bag. First of all, the band sounds pretty tight. As usual they are a lot of fun to watch. However, the portion with John Petruci soloing over a gospel singer makes me cringe. It is awful. Sometimes juxtaposition is a good thing. It is not in this case. Secondly, the video itself is an admirable attempt to put vision to sound, yet the quality of the video footage ranges from good to poor.

I realize that DT probably got little to no label support for this project, but some of these shots look far from professional. I'm speaking of the film footage shot to supplement the story of the album-NOT the footage of the band in concert. I did find some of the graphics cheesy and repetitive after about ten minutes. My other complaint has to do with the fact that often, when I would much rather be watching the band play the tune (especially the climax of the last song!) I am stuck watching the dopey film footage. This is a mixed bag so approach it with caution-even some DT fans have been critical. This is probably not the best introduction to the band if you are unfamiliar with them.

Summary: Musical mastery
Review: If you are a fan of music played with intensity and mastery, this is the DVD for you. It really doesn't matter how die-hard a fan you are of Dream Theater, this DVD should please anyone who is a fan of fine musicianship. If you are a DT fan, then get ready to experience a serious musical ride.

As you will read in other reviews, portions of the concert are over-theatrical, but the positive side of this is it gives you good feeling of what a Dream Theater concert is really like. Everyone in the band puts on a stellar performance, as you have come to expect, so it is really difficult to list specific "highlights". If you want to see two masters of the six-string universe, I have three words for you: Petrucci and Myung. Also, this DVD includes one of the greatest displays of drum pyrotechnics that you will ever see. Check out Mike Portnoy on "Finally Free" - simply amazing. Just buy this DVD, you will not be sorry...

Summary: AWESOME!!!!!
Review: Well, this is basically the "soundtrack" to the live DVD that was released earlier that year, and it's soooo nice to hear top-notch production on all these songs that until now was only available on bootlegs! :) We get a complete live rendition of Scenes from a Memory, plus a second live set featuring "A Mind Beside Itself", "Learning to Live", and "A Change of Seasons". They pulled out all the stops for this 7/30/00 Roseland show, including backup singers, a live narrator, and a soprano sax player on "Another Day". There seems to be a minimum of overdubs, as you can definitely hear a few sour notes here and there, but otherwise the performance is stellar.

Summary: Awsome, but missing some material
Review: I have watched this DVD a number of times now, and I like it better each time. The concert footage is amazing (both the audio and the video). The audio commentary by the band provides some really cool insight into what the band, the tour, and that show were all about. The behind the scenes stuff was interesting, but unnecessary, in my opinion. That's not why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5--I'm giving it four stars because I don't understand why they left off almost an hour worth of material. Queensryche did the same thing on Live Evolution, and I just don't understand why in light of the fact that a DVD can easily hold that much material.

Summary: Dream Theater, back to progession..
Review: Metropolis 2000 put plain and simple, it rocks.
Back with a new keyboard player- Jordan Rudess, the Theater is progressive rock once again. This has to be their best since the video 'Music in Progress' from the 'Images and Words' tour in 92/93'. Rudess returns to the progessive keyboarding roots previously enjoyed by Dream Theater fans in the days of Kevin Moore. I'm glad to say that I thoughly enjoyed this performance and it is a must for DT fans.

Summary: this DVD ROCKS!
Review: The band rocks, the dvd rock, everything rocks!
I don't think the sound is a bit crappy, to all of you who thinks so, GET A REAL AUDIO SYSTEM!
It's not even neccessary to have a concert like this in 5.1, stereo sounds better in this case.
The visual effects are not so bad as some of you say, I like them. The audio commentary is GREAT! lots of laughs =)
One bad thing is that not all the tracks on the 3-CD album Live Scenes from NY are on the DVD. But you can't ask for more since the DVD is titled Metropolis 2000.
To all of you who want's to experience something you'll never forget, buy the DVD! or even better go to their concerts!

Summary: Would have been better without the artsy-fartsy "direction"
Review: Mike Portnoy may be the world's best drummer, but he's no film director.

What could have been the greatest DVD of a band ever released turned out to be a throw-back to the cheesy edits and "direction" prevalent in the '60s. Multiple images on screen. Blurs. Fades. Colors. You know. The stuff you'd see in a Flower Power gig at the Fillmore.

Why he had to do that, I don't know. The concert and music itself would have been enough. In fact, it would have been far more than we deserved.

The music on Metropolis 2000 is flawless. In fact, it's astounding. It's their entire Scenes From a Memory album performed live. The sound quality is excellent. For the most part, the picture quality is, too.

But I found myself wishing there were fewer visual enhancements and "artistic" augmentations. There aren't many of them now (thank God!), but what's there is annoying.

If you're a fan of DT (as I am) you can overlook these flights of fancy on Portnoy's part. If you're new to DT and want to see what the band is all about, you probably won't even notice them.

The bottom line: This is a great DVD from a superb band. If you overlook the extravagances in editing/"direction," you'll discover an incredible musical experience you'll watch again and again.

Summary: Audio good on my system
Review: I was also disappointed that the audio was not 5.1 surround, but is in stereo. That said, I thought the audio was superb for the stereo format. It sounds better on my system than any other stereo-only dvd concert. However, I must point out that my system is very high quality, audiofile equipment (speakers are Thiel 3.6's). This system brings out every tiny bit of sound, and as a result, many older cd's and some stereo dvd's are too bright and harsh sounding, with too much treble. The Dream Theater dvd, which some have called muffled, somes out sounding perfect on my system. I do have to turn up the power a little, but my power amp is 250 watts per channel, so that's no problem.
As for the content of the dvd, wow! I play guitar and keyboards, and Petrucci and Rudess are phenomenal. I'm not a die hard fan, having only the first album, but this dvd is one of the best performed concerts I've ever seen. This is not a case of just winging it - these guys have practiced many intricate parts, and it shows. The odd meters are difficult at first, but with repeated listening, it's not bad at all, and often is more interesting than straight 4/4. I also loved the commentary.

Summary: Depends on your taste
Review: I used to love DT, now I can't stand them. I think I have a love/hate mindset towards them. haha. Theres no question the talent is phenominal. What annoys me is how they try to mix it with mainstream rock. I think they should just stop pretending to be songwriters and go off and make an album where they just (...) forever with those jazz riffs and weird beats. Then they can make another that is just straightforward metal without all the weird sidetracking solos and beats. Their technique is so good it boggles the mind! However this stuff will make you crazy with the spastic drumming and dissonant chords. I'm a talented guitarist and I have to listen to this. I think it is required listening for musicians. BUT, which are they going to do...show off or write tasty melodic songs? I hope they decide before I pull my hair out.
