Summary: Jay Z- Doing his best to change the game
Review: I purchased this DVD because I was interested in seeing what actually goes on at a concert from the viewpoint of the artist. I didn't get a chance to see the concert so I also wanted to see if they were going to show a few performances as well. Overall, this is a good DVD but if you are not a Rocafella fan or if you do not like the artists that were featured in this concert, then you will not like the DVD. If you are a hip hop fan like I am, you will enjoy the artist profiles on Jay Z, DMX, Ja Rule, Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Amil and even DJ Clue. You get to see what actually goes on with the tour buses, groupies and with the artists that have to spend nearly 3 weeks with each other on various tour stops. You get to see a few freestyles from the artists as well. Overall, this was an excellent documentary of what goes on at a hip hop concert. The only thing about the DVD that I wish there was more of, was actual concert photage. Redman & Method Man show up with "How High", Redman & Busta Rhymes perform most of "Da Goodness" and DMX and Jay Z give excerpts of their songs but nothing in it's entirety. If you like hip hop as much as I do, this is the DVD for you.

Summary: so close its like u there
Review: If there is one hip hop documentary u gotta pick up, its Backstage. Whats more fun than seein Red and Meth gettin high? Whats more fun than seein Damon Dash curse out da Def Jam prez? This documentary gets you so close to the backstage action even tha artists was startin to get [mad] yellin at da cameras. Some people said there wasnt enough actual concert footage: READ THE TITLE...! ITS CALLED BACKSTAGE NOT ONSTAGE!

Summary: Interesting documentary of hip-hop artists on the road...
Review: If you a fan'a any of the artists featured on this documentary, you'll prob'ly be interested to see this. The Hard Knock Life tour contained one'a the best ensembles of hip hop acts you could ever get together on one tour, what wit' Method Man an' Redman opening the show, an' DMX and Jay-Z as the headliners, along with appearances throughout from Amil, Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel an' Ja Rule. When the tour kicked off in February of '99 the two top-billed acts were at the height of their popularity an' success, an' hip hop as a movement was beginning to develop a face again, after the violence that had plagued the genre in the mid-'90s.

I was at the very first show at the Charlotte Coliseum, and it was one'a the most energized an' hard-hitting concerts I've ever been to, but this is what went on behind-the-scenes. An' most'a it feels real. Don't be expectin' a concert video though; there's footage from all'a the dates over the course of the tour, but the breadth of this is life on the road, in hotels, drinkin' Remy Martin, rollin' blunts, typical hip-hop excess. Is' to give you a slice of what it's like for these artists driving around to different cities every day, far from home with jus' the broken white lines of the road as a constant companion. There are quick profiles of all the artists and producers, they tell about themselves, why they're here, what the music means to them, blah, blah, blah. Hip-hop groupies take their shirts off at the backstage get-togethers, the crew partys all day, all night, then all clamour back onto several tour buses and speed off to the next city to do it all over again.

The most laughable part'a the film was Damon Dash's pathetic attempt to intimidate one'a the promoters; he's obviously tryin'ta be Suge Knight or somethin'. You can almost tell that he made sure the camera was rollin' before he went off. The most fascinating prescence in the whole documentary, if you ask me, is, ironically my LEAST favorite rapper on the tour, DMX, who is the only one who isn't constantly mugging for the camera an' goin' on egotistical rants. He mostly seems to wanna be left alone. Is' like on the surface he don't mind talkin' to the camera every so often, but the few times when the cameras catch his dark, stormy eyes, you can see the troubled soul that lies within. If you missed the Hard Knock Life tour when it rolled into your town, then this ISN'T goin' to be the next best thing, because as I said, it is NOT a concert movie. I reccommend this strictly fa' fans'a the artists.

Summary: Great but technically flawed DVD
Review: The "Backstage" DVD is a great slice of hip hop life showing you the behind-the-scenes, industry point of view on the hip hop music touring biz mixed with snippets (NOT whole songs) of some the hits songs performed live on the tour. Just for the scene where Dame Dash puts Def Jam prez Kevin Liles on blast for trying to steal Roc-A-Fella's shine by giving all the artists on tour Def Jam Hard Knock Life tour jackets is worth the price of the DVD alone.

However, I have had trouble with 2 copies of the DVD I have bought so far. Both times, chapters 9-12 have played OK but won't fast forward or rewind. When you try to do either the DVD freezes up. I'm not sure if I'm buying from a bad batch of DVDs at the particular store I went to or if this is a problem with all the Backstage DVD's but it's frustrating if you want to just skip to a particular scene within any of these chapters. In summation: great disc for those wanting to see some of the reality behind the glitz and glamor of the hip hop music world but buyer beware: there may be problems with your DVD depending on where you purchase it.
