Rating: Summary: Please, please, please! Review: Please release North & South on DVD...I remember seeing this for the first time on television; I skipped a party and sat in the hostess's house with her mom to watch it! The second time, I painstakingly videotaped it. Now my videos are wearing out I watch them so often. This is the perfect miniseries for DVD--do the right thing!
Rating: Summary: North and South "a must see on DVD" Review: The enduring image of that $100 bill being split between Orry Main and George Hazard is what will always remind me of this great mini-series. I was 9 yrs old when it came out and recorded both parts 1 and 2 on VHS. Sadly the quality has deteriorated over time and it is disappointing to learn that it is not available on DVD format.Wonderfully acted with a romantic theme threaded through the plot of a Civil War that nearly tore a nation apart. It is heartening to read that other members have fond memories of this mini-series and, like me, can't wait for it to come out on DVD.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Movie Review: The Movie was excellent, the cast was also excellent. I could just keep re-watching this movie for days. I was so happy to see that it was out on video, I have watched it so many times since I purchased the videos, I am surprised they are not worn out yet. It is an excellent story of how the North battled the South and the pain and the suffering that it caused friends and family. Especially the pain it caused for Orry who was a Confederate of the South and his best friend George who was a Northerner, but through it all they remained the best of friends. For whomever doesn't own this film should, it is one of the best, it has almost everything, love, fighting, and romance. You will laugh and you will cry that is how great this film is.
Rating: Summary: Greatest Civil War Story Review: This came out in the mid 1980's and I was completely enraptured by the beautiful telling of two mens friendship through the Civil War. Their families laughter, heartache and love really captured the essence of how they lived in the 1800's. Patrick Swayze and James Read were so compelling in their roles. I taped this on VHS when it showed on TV and it has become my favorite show to watch surpassing even Gone With the Wind. Unfortunately my tape at this time is starting to deteriorate and I am truly hoping that the TV studio who made the miniseries will put in out on DVD. Give yourself a chance to watch this timeless story on the Civil War as the historical facts are presented in such a way that you can learn so much from it and enjoy it at the same time. You, too, will also want to see it over and over again.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Civil War movie Review: This is the best civil war movie I have ever seen... This movie is watched so often that the tapes are getting worn out. The characters are very beliveable and I would recomend this movie to anybody who likes good movies, even if they aren't a civil war buff. The movie not only portrays the war itself but it also shows the family and what was going on on the home front, it didn't just center on the war. This is as I said my favorite civil war movie. I also recommend the Blue and the Gray, but I think this one is better. It is long, because it is a mini series, but it is worth it.
Rating: Summary: Civil War at its best Review: This is the best movie of its time I have ever seen. My husband & I have been searching for it for years. [...]. The only movie that evens comes close is "The Blue & the Gray".
Rating: Summary: When will this be released on DVD? Review: This was one of the greatest series (if not the best) of all time. I have no idea why this is not on DVD. I don't know what it will take them to finally produce it. Maybe instead of just joining the list on Amazon.com, we should also send an email to Time Warner as Time Warner might not realize how many people want to see this movie come out on DVD. I would happily buy it as I first saw this series (Book I and II) when it came out on TV, and have watched it several times by taking it out at the library.
Rating: Summary: Katie Review: This wonderful drama is about a difficult time in Our Country's past, that we probably wish we could have dealt with in another way, rather than by shedding blood over so many years. From viewing you get a very good perspective point of view from both the North and South. It is a true Drama in showing love, loss, pain, and joy. It not only shows how life was lived before and during the war, but how soldiers had to survive living in fear of war and bloodshed for four years...
Rating: Summary: Cult Classic vs. Great FIlm Making Review: True Fiction. Even the character portrayals are historically inaccurate. John Jakes' storyline has been embellished, too, approaching the cheesy. Everybody is a general or a national hero. All the characters have plenty of expendable income and are attractive human beings -- even the ones who are poor and/or downtrodden. Jakes never wrote the stories this way. The acting and production didn't warrant any Emmys, either, by the way. A little over-acted, I'd say, complete with a truckload of bad accents and women's costuming that closely resembled 80s era prom dresses and/or something you'd find at Vicki's Secret. Yet, the first two miniseries in the saga, "North & South" and "North & South: Book 2," are cult classics. The all-star casts, alone, are enough to coax even the toughest critics into sitting through them. In fact, the films are entertaining, despite the embarrassment you feel in watching them over and over again. Watch them because you love Harlequin romances or watch them to count the historical flaws and breaks from John Jakes' original story - but watch them you will.
Rating: Summary: A True Civil War Classic in the Truest Sense of the Word Review: We enjoy 18 hours of uninterrupted family enjoyment when our first snow comes. It's a family time we all look forward to each year. This timeless classic must be released on DVD.
