Review: The Desmond Project is music poetry. This is lighter jazz, reminiscent of Vince Guaraldi, Diana Krall, and, yes, Paul Desmond. The selections are melodic. The quartet is composed of inventive and accomplished musicians who refreshingly do not feel the need to impress us with meandering and persistent solos. You will not find incendiary chops and riffs here. This is more contemplative. Make a cocktail, turn up the stereo, sit back and enjoy.

The Desmond Project is available on CD and on DVD Audio (2-channel only) disks. With its increased resolution, the DVD format imparts greater detail and separation of the instruments. Close your eyes and you are transported to front row table in an intimate cafe. The effects, particularly expanded soundstage, are enhanced on audiophile components. Regardless, having heard both formats, the performance is clean and sharp. Either format is sure to please.
