Summary: Another Record Industry Fumble
Review: I too am a big ABB fan, and have never been disappointed at their concerts, but this DVD isn't what it could or should be! How can they claim this to be approx. 90 minutes? It's 55! Anybody that has seen the boys in concert knows that they are hardly breaking a sweat after 55 minutes. Furthermore, it is ignorant to place interviews in the middle of songs. I might play the disc 100 times and never get tired of the music, but I don't need to hear Dickey talk about the naming of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" more than once. Isn't that common sense? The music that is played is very good, and it's a shame they didn't do a better job of putting together this disc!

Review: I was also expecting an incredible DVD version of this fantastic vhs show. I urge you NOT to buy the DVD version! Stick with the vhs...it gives you a great show. I could not believe how cheated I felt when I threw this DVD on. What a shame. I am still mad and from this day forward I am not buying anything from SONY DVD until I read some reviews from the folks who bought them.

Summary: Horrible DVD - Buy the VHS instead
Review: I would also like to add my 2 cents concerning the "Live at Great Wood" DVD. It stinks and it sucks. Too much talking, not enough of the concert music and they have shortened to disc.

Get the VHS and record it to a DVD. That's what I did. You get the complete 90 minute concert and a video of nothing but music. No comments, no interviews, no interruptions. Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts are GREAT. Greg Allman is his usual excellent musician. Allman Brothers at their best.

If I could assign zero stars to this product, this DVD would get it.

Review: I've been an Allman Brothers Band fan for over 25 years & generally have never been disapointed by their releases. This is a poor production of a great concert. Massive edits, partial songs, songs interupted by interviews.

Hopefully the band will have this show re-released properly. Meanwhile, the VHS is superb!

Review: If you are a true Allman Brothers fan do not buy this on DVD.
VHS only the reason being is on the DVD the band cuts in talking
during the guitar solos it is very annoying. The VHS copy has the full show uninterrupted with all the solos.I promise you will be more happy with the VHS version.

Summary: "It's the performance, stupid !"
Review: Just my opinion,

I'm also a huge fan of the ABB. The music is great, what there is of it. But whoever produced the DVD cut out, and interrupted the music. That's pretty much "blasphemy" in my opinion. I got this DVD to see and hear the band play music. To try to get a feel for the live performance.

IMO, the folks who chose the format did a disservice to the ABB. I don't have the VHS, but it sounds to me from the other reviewers that it is the way to go.

Review: Let me explain...

I'm a huge Allmans fan - have been since I first saw them @ Great Woods back in '91. 30+ shows later (and I was at the show taped & recorded here). Anyone who is a big Allman's fan knows that many of the shows they played in the early 90's they simply "nailed". Perfect A+. This was one of those shows. Although watching it on tv is not even close to being there in person ... it's a great way to reminisce the "live" experience - for anyone who has ever seen them in person. The set list was unbelievable at this show, and the acoustic set was one that I'll never forget. Every single song played by the Brothers set-up the next perfectly ... the crowd was really into it (but that's another story) - and of course the wrapped up the night with UNFORGETTABLE versions of Liz Reed, Revival & Whipping Post.

The original VHS tape perfectly captured the night I never want to forget. It was all about the music. 5 stars+. Enough said.

Along comes new technology, DVD. I expected to see the original VHS version, with additional footage (some interviews, other footage, etc.) ... but what does SONY decide to do ?

They absolutely butchered the classic VHS version. The "paste" some short interviews in the middle of some of the songs which made the set flow so nicely from start to finish on the VHS version. This cuts us away from the music, and reliving the live experience. To make matters worse, the geniuses at Sony decided to cut out the last 2/3 of Blue Sky (boy did that piss me off) - in favor of yet another interview with Dickey. Whoever made that decision would have had a tough time getting out of the Great Woods parking lot alive if he did the same at the live show.

Why did Sony feel the need to continuously cut us away from the live concert experience to listen to Greg & Dickey talk about ... whatever it was they were talking about ?? I cant figure it out.

My advice: Buy the the VHS if you don't own it yet. If you already own the VHS - DO NOT buy the DVD. Save your $$ towards a ticket to next years Beacon Theater run in NYC, and while you're there go to the "Bear bar" 2 blocks up the street.... it is the original "Coyote Ugly" - you won't be disappointed !!!

Review: Long time Allman Bros. fan. I own the "Live at Great Woods VHS" and was excited to purchase the DVD. I am disappointed with the interruptions and interviews during several of the songs. "Blue Sky" hardly exist due to an interview with Dickey Betts. It just appears that this recording was hurried and it is much shorter than the original VHS tape. I would purchase the tape instead of the DVD. Bummer....

Review: my background is that i never seen an ABB show live. all i have to my credits is the great woods DVD, the brothers of the road DVD, and a real media clip of the original band doing dreams (unbelievable- planetdobro.com). i bought "the brothers of the road" first, and i was disappointed big time. the guys just were plain disinterested. no emotion, no love. dickey can be seen combing his hair in the back during dan toler's solo during liz reed. 'it' just wasnt there.

then i bought the great woods. two words: TIGHT and AGGRAVATING. i mean these guys were hittin the note! unbelievable show. percussion was kickin, esp during liz reed and whipping post. nice accoustic set. "brothers" tried to be too country, "great woods" tried way too hard to be bluesy. even on some numbers like blue sky (which they only played the solo), the producers decided that it wasnt really worth listening to, so they covered it up with an interview. even the beginning of revival was too country! liz reed not only had interviews during it, but the song was cut a few times. whipping post for some reason only had one solo. this was aggravating.

but the band was tight as hell and kicked some major tail. and they had fun. instead of dickey combing his hair during liz reed, he was high fiving greg during the drum solo. even the set up was tighter, the persussion section was close knit. musically, the music kind of hit a lull half way through for me, when the slow blues number 'get on with your life' played. it needed an upbeat song like southbound or something. im going to try to find this coveted VHS tape, though, because i hear the interviews are absent there.
