Summary: AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!
Review: When I first watched this DVD I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. It's as close to seeing U2 live as you'll ever get. I saw these rock gods at London's Earls Court and every time I watch it, I feel like it's 19th August 2001 all over again. The band are awesome, no gimmicks, just an earth shattering performance on a heart-shaped catwalk that will thrill you time and time again. The extra features are great, I particularly like viewing the crowd as if I'm sat on Bono's shoulders (in my dreams).
Lose the lights and turn up the surround sound.
Trust me, if you like U2 you HAVE TO BUY THIS DVD. DO IT NOW!!!

Summary: Don't Read This One If....
Review: ...you don't want to see another fawning review, because this is one too. This is quite simply the best concert video in existence. The consumate showman with the ultimate band... how could you go wrong? Besides that, the second disk is just icing on the cake. Can I give six stars?

Summary: cognitive dissonance rocks!..well, kind of...
Review: What happens when you spend a decade deconstructing your image, then want to embrace that image again? That's the position U2 find themselves in on the elevation tour dvd, and the results are entertaining and not quite convincing all at once. The band sounds great, and there are moments of musical excitement throughout ("Gone" is particularly stirring), and the open seating provides an immediate connection with the audience that is thrilling to watch, even with the distance of TV and video. Despite this, it's hard to shake the air of conservatism that infects the concert, as a band which had consistently taken risks in their stage shows throughout the 90s seems to be playing it safe and consolidating their audience. That's not entirely bad, and it's gratifying to see the band embraced again after a hootie and celine-obsessed nation rejected the amazing POP album and tour four years earlier. It's not like Bono and the boys don't deserve the cash and accolades, but for those of us who loved U2 in the 90s even more than in the 80s precisely because they never seemed to rest on their laurels, it's hard not to feel a little bored and disappointed.
Actually, the extras on this disc, particularly a refreshingly frank tour documentary, are almost as entertaining as the show itself.

Summary: AWESOME!
Review: We saw this concert when U2 performed at the University of Notre Dame, early on their tour (the date had to be delayed due to the events of 9-11). It was exactly what they did on stage at ND & the memories are priceless! Couldn't ask for a better DVD for an avid U2 fan!

Review: If you are unable to ever see this band in person then buy the DVD....I have seen them in concert numorous times and this is the closest thing available other than a concert ticket.

Summary: Great show, but U2 live can be so much better!
Review: This DVD captures one of the world's most popular and sustaining rock bands during their hugely successful 2001 Elevation world tour. It does a good job, too. U2 rock their way through 20+ years of great music, relying heavily on their most recent album "All That You Can't Leave Behind". The show was pieced together from two nights of performances in Boston, and captures some great moments. Highlights include roaring versions of "Until The End Of The World", "Gone" and "The Fly", a beautiful mid-show acoustic set with Bono and The Edge, and an outstanding, emotional version of "Walk On" to close the show.

There are two reasons I just can't bring myself to give this DVD 5 stars. First of all, as mentioned, this is a compilation of bits and pieces from two nights of performances. Although the DVD would make you think this is all one continuous show, it's obvious that it is not. There are a few songs the band played during these shows that have been dropped from the DVD altogether, but the most frustrating moments are the quick and obvious edits between songs like "Until The End Of The World" and "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" where it's clear that there is some cutting and splicing going on. The entire "show" leaves you with the feeling that you missed some parts, a feeling you never get with the "Zoo TV Live From Sydney" or "Popmart Live From Mexico City" concerts.

The second problem I have with this DVD is the Elevation concert itself. U2 did a great job pulling off an excellent tour, but they are capable of so much more. Just watching "Zoo TV" or even "Popmart" makes this clear. U2 make some great music, but in the past what has made it even more entertaining was the personality they brought to that music with their over-the-top stages, costumes, antics and special effects found in their 90's shows. None of these elements exist in the Elevation concerts; it's just four guys playing rock music. That's exactly what the band wanted it to be this time around, so I guess they accomplished what they set out to do. And Elevation by itself is still one of the best concerts around, but compared to Zoo TV and Popmart it can leave a feeling of disappointment. It can be tough watching a band that you know can blow your mind intentionally settle for a stripped-down back-to-basics rock show.

Summary: Average performance
Review: Having heard the energetic Boston performances on 'Under a Blood Red Sky' and having experienced the 2001 Elevation tour a few weeks prior to the recording of this video (which is actually a combination of two nights at Boston's Fleet Center), I was looking forward to the release of this DVD. Without delving into the technical aspects of the DVD (the bonus features are not much to write about), the performances here are just average.

On the plus side, in the midst of all the recent fervor regarding U2 "returning to their roots", they have nonetheless opted to include quality tunes like "Gone" and "Stay" (acoustic) (from the much-maligned records 'Pop' (1997) and 'Zooropa' (1993)) instead of popular favorites like "Pride (in the Name of Love)" and "Mysterious Ways". Furthermore, the performances of "Until the End of the World" and "The Fly" are better than they have ever been, as with "Bullet the Blue Sky", which seems to morph with each tour and takes on a whole different lyrical context here.

On the negative side is Bono's vocals, which have not been good since the PopMart tour due to a medical condition. (An example here is "Kite".) That can be excused, since the point of making and releasing a LIVE recording should not be to capture a perfect performance. What cannot be excused is Bono's distasteful, if not disingenuous, invocation of the memory of Joey Ramone in "In a Little While" (as being the last song Joey Ramone ever heard). Also, the introduction of the band (as a prelude to "Desire") and thanking the audience for "spending your hard-earned cash" on a rock show are more than a bit unnecessary, if not pretentious, in the attempt to be nonpretentiousne. It's one thing to be over-the-top and make fun of it (e.g., ZooTV and PopMart tours), but it's a whole different thing to try to tell an audience to believe that the top-grossing act of 2001 are just four working-class mates. These are the sorts of things that annoyed me about U2 in the 1980s, and I hope the "return to their roots" movement does not mean that they are going to start taking themselves too seriously again.

To summarize, unlike the other U2 live videos, there is simply no magic here. Thus, in order of quality, I would recommend the following U2 live videos/DVDs: (1) Zoo TV live in Sydney; (2) Rattle & Hum; (3) Under a Blood Red Sky; (4) PopMart; and (5) Elevation 2001.

Review: This is a great 2 DVD set. Bono and the band are at their best in this concert from Boston. The bonus DVD is a great treat. You won't be unhappy if you're a U2 fan. Buy it!!
