Rating: Summary: Don't buy it Review: This movie is horrible. Picture a guy with 6 pack abs talking effeminately, pretending to be Jimi Hendrix. It's that bad. They throw in a softcore lesbian scene, hoping to save the movie I suppose, but it can't be saved.
Rating: Summary: This is an abomination - negative 5 stars Review: This trainwreck is better than Oliver Stones excreble Doors movie, at least in terms of the facts, but thats the only thing positive I can say about it. Its not an entertaining view by any stretch of the imagination and the flaws, of which there are many, are glaring and so egregious they spoil the movie. I'll touch on a couple of the most criminal. First off the actor playing Hendrix simply does not have the acting skills or physical resemblance to make a believable Hendrix. He's not a horrible actor, just in no way convincing as Jimi. Perhaps they should have cast somebody who had even a remote clue as how to play a guitar. Likewise the guys playing Noel and Mitch are in no way convincing. In fact that criticism holds true for everyone in the movie except perhaps for Billy Zanes' portrayal of Mike Jeffrey. Many of the character portrayals are at best laughable. Second and most importantly NONE of the music in the film was written or played by Hendrix. Since the filmakers couldn't get the rights to Hendrix's music they could use only those songs Jimi covered, such as Hey Joe and they couldn't use Hendrix's performances either. Instead they used some studio band to play the covers and bad Hendrix-like songs/jams instead. I'm sorry but watching the actors badly pretend to play BAD Hendrix-like songs performed by some studio hacks creates more pain than should be inflicted on any movie goer. This film does a diservice to Hendrix's memory and legacy. Avoid it at all costs.
Rating: Summary: Sucks Review: This was a really lousy movie, and a really lousy interpretation of Jimi's life. This is a good example of movie companies trying to make money by hitting a target audience with a very shallow product. The dude they had playing Eric Clapton made me laugh, He looks like Neo from "The Matrix" without the funny glasses. Basically, the music sucked, the acting was bad, there were huge gaps in the story (whatever happened to Jimi's military service?), and there was a sex scene thrown in just to attract people with dirty minds.
Rating: Summary: Hey, that guy kind of looks like Hendrix! Review: Well, I was bored one night and flipping through the channels, when what do I see? The God of most self-respecting, aspiring guitar Gods, Jimi Hendrix. I was very excited at first, but the first scene of him playing in a bar totally killed the experience for me. Not that he was playing in a bar, but it was obvious that the actor chosen to play the man who is the embodiment of rock guitar music, didnt know jack $H!T about the guitar. Hey, I know that not every actor is going to be able to perfectly recreate music that Jimi played, but come on. When the audio track is notes going down a scale and the actor is sliding his hands cluelessly up and down the fretboard, I had to turn the TV off. For your sake and for the sake of Jimi Hendrix, dont watch this movie. If you want to hear music get the following: Axis: Bold As Love, Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, First Rays of the New Rising Sun, South Saturn Delta, Band of Gypsys, live at berkley, or anything with the ACTUAL Jimi Hendrix playing on it. If you want to learn about the man himself, you're on Amazon.com, which is primarily a book store, you might think about buying what is known to some people as a "biography", or if your lazy like most people watch the VH1 Behind the Music.
Rating: Summary: Decent job despite limitations Review: Yes, the music wasn't that great, though the playing for the M.L. King tribute in N.J. was excellent, a real highlight. Harris did portray Hendrix well, at least in comparison to documentary footage of the man. As TV music biographies go, this is quite good. I gave it an extra 1/2 star, being a Hendrix fan. Worth renting for Hendrix and rock and roll fans.
