Summary: Pretty average show, but....
Review: The last reviewer needs to watch a few more episodes of Star Trek and calm down. Yes this is Genesis at their "pop" best, but lets not turn this into an Gabriel/post-Gabriel Genesis debate, which judging from all of his other reviews, he does repeatedly. I doubt he even watched the video, which by the way, for the casual reader is only OK at best. As a Genesis fan I bought it to add to the collection but I would not recommend it to the casual fan, its got too much of a Miami Vice feel to it to be truly enjoyable. Do not, I repeat, NOT buy the Tokyo Tapes DVD. Buy the CD. While the music is pretty good, it is the most lame show in the history of concerts, absolutely zero stage presence by any of those so called non-sellout real musicians or whatever the previous reviewer called them. Chester (funny how he is not considered a sellout, but Daryl is (Daryl's recent solo stuff is fantastic, by the way)) and John Wetton steal what little show there is on the Tokyo Tapes, not Hackett. Finally, for the previous reviewer to say a "real rock" band like Yes never "sold out" and played pop is stupid, you ever heard "owner of a lonely heart" (you know its much better than an owner of a broken heart) or what about "rhythm of love"?

Summary: Great setlist, strong performance
Review: There are generally considered to be three eras of Genesis--1) the Peter Gabriel pushing the creative envelope "all five of us" era, 2) the "there's still the other four of us" transition, and 3) the commercially successful, radio-friendly Collins/Banks/Rutherford era. Fans are divided--some like the old, some like the new. I like both. This concert, from July of 1987 captures the band during the commercially successful Invisible Touch Tour, at Wembley. The setlist is comprised primarily from Abacab, the Superfection album, and Invisible Touch. If you like these albums, this is a great concert video. Most of these songs could be heard on the radio back when stations played album-oriented rock. The songs are performed well, the band sounds nice and tight--more so than on the "Way We Walk" cd's and DVD. Furthermore, the camerawork is nice--smooth transitions from camera-to-camera, with nice sweeping crowd shots, etc. Songs include: Mama, Abacab, Domino Pt. 1, Domino Pt. 2, That's All, Brazilian, Land Of Confusion, Tonight Tonight Tonight, Throwing It All Away, Home By The Sea/Second Home by The Sea, Invisible Touch, Drum Duet, Los Endos, Turn It On Again medley. If that doesn't sell you on this title, how about over two hours of Phil Collins with his 80's style business-up front/party out back mullet? Priceless!

Summary: Prog+pop=good DVD!
Review: There is plenty of prog on this DVD. Yes, there is plenty of pop, too. Los Endos from A Trick Of The Tail is on this DVD. The reason that there is no In The Cage, etc. on the VHS OR the DVD is because there is no footage of this. All of the cameras filming the show for the release were having their tapes changed during that time, due to the filming being done on an odd format. An oversight for sure, but apparently one that the band decided to live with.

Summary: Very bad show!! Steve Hackett's "Tokyo Tapes" was better
Review: This band formerly known as Genesis continues to put such silly jungles and not even play The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel's departure from Genesis destroyed and ended the band completely. What we have here is a leftover band of what was once a respected rock band of the 70's Daryl Steurmer's guitar playing is somewhat of an insult compared to Steve Hackett's leads during his tenure with Genesis. Hackett was an artist, writter, and professional guitar player. Steurmer was just a hired hand that can just strum strings. It's often funny watching this moron try to play Steve's written guitar parts on the real Genesis songs. (thats why they are just snippets lol) Why does the record company put out such garbarge?? What happened to the 1976 Apollo show with Bill Bruford why is that not on DVD??? What happened to the 1973 Oxford show when Genesis toured for "Selling England By the Pound". These were eye opener shows! There are too many bad songs for really bad albums here. Pathetic sellouts! In any case Steve Hackett put out a DVD called "Tokyo Tapes". It has Firth of Fifth, Watcher of the Skies, Los Endos, I Know What I Like in their FULL versions live with Chester Thomson and far more talented members of former progessive rock bands(not like stupid snippets like the leftover band did into one stupid sounding collage of a song) This is a true tribute to Genesis compared to this. If Pink Floyd, Yes, or King Crimson(real rock bands)wouldn't sound good playing Micheal Jackson songs than how does Genesis sound any better playing Phil Collins pop songs.

Summary: Great Gig
Review: This DVD has an excellent sounding audio track, especially in DTS 5.1 surround - killer! The video is what took me from a 5 to a 3 star rating. First, the image isn't as crisp as some concert videos I've seen (Clapton-One More Car, and Eagles-Hell Freezes are both A+ for video quality). Second, the editing is two rapid- cut to Phil, cut to Tony, cut to Chester, cut to an audience long shot: very 80's MTV. I just wanted the camera to hold on a front row view for a bit and let me soak it in. Awesome show though.

Summary: Genesis Rocks! Really! - Remember?
Review: This DVD will bring back alot of the great memories of a Genesis show. A night when the band are burning up the stage! As one reviewer had said, these guys are in a category all their own. They play like no other band. Brilliant and powerful, and very, very original. Even though Genesis never got the recognition in the last years of the band (Ray Wilson is a brilliant artist that most of America missed out on because of their poor taste and lack of interest) that they, more than anyone else, deserved. Genesis literally changed my life as a musician during the seventies and they opened-up my tastes to many more musicians and styles of music. These guys should still be playing together in my opinion. I miss them - alot!

Summary: Turn it on Again!
Review: This is a good Genesis live DVD. I had lost my love for Collins era Genesis lately, but this DVD brings it back. The Way We Walk Live DVD was kind of slow and dare I say, lacked passion. But this one, oh boy, is exciting and restores my love for Collins and the boys.
Sample, for instance, ABACAB which is powerful and rythmic. It rocks. The long songs namely Domino and Home by the Sea are played with great energy and vigor and reminds you that Genesis is more than a prog band gone pop. No, circa 1987 they jam!!
The sound is pretty good given its age;so no complaints. Likewise, the picture, in widescreen, is pretty decent with minimal blurring and edge enhancement issues.
The only minuses is that this DVD caters to the casual Genesis fan and takes out the classic stuff save for Los Endos. Gone are the likes of Supper's Ready and In the Cage. This is too bad, but I will forgive them. All and all, get this DVD as it is better than the previous The Way We Walk.

Summary: The best music dvd ever!
Review: This is an awesome DVD!!! The band is at the apex of their career together. The playing is much more spirited, and better, than on the "Way We Walk" DVD. The song selection, sound, and video are awesome. There is only one angle available for this DVD. Only one low point, the medley at the end could have been much better. The band has done this medley on the 1983 tour, and again in 1990 as well. They should have done the In the Cage Medley from the Abacab tour, it is far superior to this. Many highlights include the extended version of Abacab, Home By the Sea with Phil on electronic drums, and the Brazilian. Phil does a great job of working the crowd. Tony Banks is superb on keyboards and Mike Rutherford does a great job on guitar, not bass. Why did he do most of the bass playing on "The Way We Walk" don't know. Anyway, Chester and Daryl are awesome, except for Daryl's cheesy coat with the crest on it. The track listing lists "Do the Neurotic" as a track, but it is actually exit music, not a part of the concert. The documentary for the tour is outstanding as well. The 70,000+ in attendance are really in to the show! If for no other reason, buy this DVD to see Phil's mullet with the bald spot!
