Rating: Summary: not that good. Then I hear something... Review: like a few others, i listened/watched. It was nice to see how old everyone has grown, even though Tom Petty should be in he next "Back to the future" film... As for the young'uns, Jo Brown is a marvelous singer. However, as i watched, nearing boredom, i see Eric Clapton performing (he does, almost every song...but look for it) "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Pop out the CD/DVD and play something else. relax. Play it again. Here, you will see one true friend of George's play so hard, you will NEED to see it again. and again. for real. Seriously. I own a pickup truck. WATCH IT AGAIN.
Rating: Summary: Moving Tribute to George Harrison Review: George Harrison's best known songs come to life in this musical tribute directed by Eric Clapton. Friends of George, some you never heard of, fill the stage to offer energetic and, a times, moving renditions of songs like Beware of Darkness, My Sweet Lord, Taxman, Something, Here Comes the Sun and many more. For the Eric Clapton fans, his vocals and guitar playing were driven by genuine emotion over the loss of his close friend. You could also sense the feeling of loss in Paul McCartney as he played George's favorite instrument, the uke, and sang "Something." Buy the DVD.
Rating: Summary: Audio is totally unacceptable Review: Don't buy this DVD if you expect to enjoy your home theater system. The audio is uneven, ranging from wonderfully crisp to terribly muted.
Rating: Summary: .. Review: the sitar playing of mr.shenkars daughter alone is worth the prize of these discs. Eric clapton, now in his early 60's, still soars on "while my guitar gently weeps". and the conglomeration of so many excellent artists and so much collective goodwill really shows here. Would definately recommend.
Rating: Summary: Stellar performers only outdone by George's incredible music Review: This is a MUST SEE if you are: 1. A George Harrison fan 2. A Beatles Fan 3. An Eric Clapton Fan 4. A Monte Python Fan 5. A Billy Pretson fan 6. A MACCA fan 7. A Ringo fan 8. A Tom Petty fan 9. A Jools Holland fan A N D IF YOU THOUGHT NO ONE COULD BRING THE SURVIVING BEATLES BACK ONSTAGE, well George Harrison does it (exactly one year after his untimley death). Watch it and, you will witness a sort of transcendental group experience as you see the aforementioned (and many other GREAT musicians) not only having a great time, but actually being elevated to "play their very best" for George. This is the best DVD I have seen in a long time (every bit as good as the DVD's with the Beatles on: Their 1st US Tour, A Hard Days Night, Lennon's Imagine, & Macca's USA TOUR) Get it & watch it ONLY with people who really understand how brilliant the Beatles were, the exceptional song writing of not just John & Paul but of George Harrison; and WHAT IT MUST HAVE TAKEN TO BRING Paul, Ringo, Eric Clapton BACK ONSTAGE together 40 years later,to express their love this way... When you realized that George Harrison was 'just" the third composer of The Beatles, you can understand why there were so gigantic. George gaves us songs full of joy & emotion being in The Most Beloved Band or during his solo years. This DVD gets close to perfection, from a musical, visual, and emotional point of view. The songs are played in the same way: perfect. The nice taste is present all the time. George appears (let's say,.. physically) in a big photo over the stage, and that's it. Watching the public and his friends, playing HIS (ours ) music. Today, everybody talks about how great GH was, after almost ignoring him for years. The " musical critics" always preferred John to the other beatles, during the solo years, and have been very unfaithfull and unfair with the other Beatles. Maybe, one day, this love for Lennon don't blind them and will allow them to talk great things about Paul, for example, without waiting that he passed away, like with Dear george.
Rating: Summary: Humble Tribute Review: This is a beautiful and deeply moving concert. Artists who personally knew George Harrison and/or had worked with him stepped up to the plate to honor him and his lifetime artistic achievements. Former Beatle bandmates Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney were among those paying tribute to George Harrison. An excellent selection of Harrisongs from the Beatle years to his solo work are covered; I especially loved the working of the 1966 Harrison classic "I Want to Tell You," which remains one of my favorite songs to this day. Please treat yourself to this because it is very moving and a treat for the ears. Please also treat yourself to the solo works of George Harrison. He was and will remain a nonpareil, exceptional talent.
Rating: Summary: You Don't See Me Cryin'...You Don't Hear Me Sighin' Review: Thank you, Eric Clapton, for giving us the blessing of this beautiful and moving concert in honor of George. I grew up listening to the Beatles, and always had a particular affection for George and Ringo, the two 'stabilizing' members of the band. I always appreciated George's quiet consideration before speaking, and his thoughtfulness and the fundamental goodness of his heart. When George died, I was deeply saddened like many millions of others, and thought that no tribute or monument could ever do him justice. I was wrong. The Concert for George, primarily organized by his long time friend Eric Clapton, provided just the catharsis that his friends and fans needed. I was amazed that these close personal friends and relatives (Dhani was on stage the entire set) didn't get choked up at any point during the show, because I sure did (during 'Photograph'.) In fact the show was hard for me to watch the first time as I wanted to hear George singing. Eric said it best in an interview, though, when he explained that at first rehearsals were tough to get through, but the rehearsals and show provided a mechanism of grieving to all his personal friends. That explained it brilliantly: They had time to work through it, while the viewer at home did not. (Who says rock stars can't be truly insightful?) The musicians obviously worked very hard to get this just right and they succeeded brilliantly: this DVD beautifully captures it all. There are actually two DVDs in the set, one is the unabridged concert, and the other is the edited concert for theatrical release and some short subjects. I recommend watching the unabridged concert first. It opens with Anoushka Shankar playing some Indian music, which, of course, George loved. I don't really care for it, but it was soulful and well performed. George was a huge Monty Python fan, and the Pythons were up next and performed "The Lumberjack Song" after a heartwarming spoof of a eulogy by Michael Palin that George would have loved. For me it was all good, but some of it was amazing. Ringo was a standout with "Photograph", which is still the best Ringo song, and a song that Ringo and George wrote together, and "Honey Don't", an old Carl Perkins song that George loved. Eric Clapton was wonderful on everything he performed on; I particularly liked his pseudo-duet with Paul on "Something", and with the whole ensemble on "Wah Wah", which had breathtaking percussion, and, of course, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", a song veritably made for him. Without question though, the greatest performer in the show was Joe Brown, a major institution in early British rock, but today relatively unknown in the US. Joe's main set started with a hauntingly beautiful rendition of "Here Comes the Sun", and then went to "That's The Way It Goes", a song I have always loved, but never got the acclaim it deserved. Joe also closed the show with the dreamy "I'll See You in My Dreams", and he sang it like he meant it. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the beautiful "Isn't It a Pity" by the multitalented Billy Preston, who would have won the best dressed award. There were a couple of weaker performances to be seen. None that were overtly bad, but they certainly were not up to the standards of the rest of the show. The primary offenders here were Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who are normally great, but came across as lifeless and flat. I also found Jeff Lynne's voice to sound a bit tired, especially when he sang a verse of "Wah Wah" and to a lesser degree on "The Inner Light." I (really) hate to say it, but I also found Paul's version of "For You Blue" a bit dull. I think it's interesting that Paul picked a song of George's from "Let It Be", an album where tempers ran high and contentiousness prevailed; perhaps that has clouded my vision a bit on the subject. Despite that, it was wonderful seeing Paul and Ringo play together again, and I have to wonder if that's the last time we'll be able to see that. Extras include a behind the scenes and rehearsal video, which is very interesting, a wonderful interview video, and a backstage video of the Monty Python crew. All are well done and worth watching. For any fan of George's this is a must. I never thought that I could like this DVD as much as I do since I knew I would miss hearing George on the songs. After a few viewings, though, I now feel happy when I watch it, and have found it to be a fitting tribute to a great man. While we will always miss you, George, I will always be grateful for this beautiful and befitting tribute. I'll see you in my dreams.
Rating: Summary: Sheer Majesty! Review: This DVD is presented with all the plomp & circumstance that it richly deserves. The concert, and the DVD, were created with the necessary preparation that suits it's subject, and most of the participants involved with the project. The Beatles were/are the royal family of Pop Music. If there is any musician of equal statue, it is certainly Clapton, and his involvement in any endeavor always guarantees that the highest quality, and taste is used in the final disposition of the work. Many have written here of the glorious show, and the wonderful efforts put forth by these great, and beloved artists who gathered at the Royal Albert Hall that night to give tribute, and celebrate the life, and accomplishments of Harrison, so I won't spout redundant comentary using the same superlatives that you must certainly have read numerous times in the previous reviews in this forum. But, I will say that it is with great appreciation to all the principles in this effort that I offer my thanks for this gem that I will surely view many more times in the future. George Harrison will be missed by many, but his music will never be forgotten, and this DVD package is an excellent way to enjoy his music, and honor his memory.
